HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-10-30, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008.WAYNE LOWEThe community was saddened lastweek to hear of the passing of one ofits best-known citizens.
Wayne Lowe of Brussels passed
away peacefully at his residence on
Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. Born in
Wingham on May 4, 1943, Wayne
was in his 66th year.
There is probably no other person
who exemplified the spirit of, and love
for, home as Wayne.
He has over his lifetime been a
leader and cheerleader for Brussels,
taking on volunteer tasks, personally
and with organizations. He
enthusasitically spearheaded many
projects and worked tirelessly to
generate a matching enthusiasm from
others. His kindness and smile were
inspiring.
Wayne’s commitment and
contribution to the community was
broad. He served on the Brussels Fire
Department, village council and was
on the property committee for the
building of the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. But his
participation also extended to
recreational pursuits. He belonged to
the Brussels Curling Club for a time
and served as its president at one point.
In 1983 Wayne was one of a group of
men who brought Junior C hockey to
town.
Few knew how to celebrate Brussels
better than he did either. In 1972 he
was on the committee for the Brussels
Centennial. He served as vice-
president of the 115th birthday
celebration, and oversaw the parade
for the 125th anniversary homecoming
in 1997. Having chaired the first Fun
Fest committee in 1989, it was no
surprise when the decision to hold a135th party was made in 2007, Waynestepped up to act as one of the co-chairs.
Also not surprising was that
following the success of this event he
championed the idea of reviving Fun
Fest.
Wayne’s community involvement
didn’t end at Brussels borders,
however, as he was an avid supporter
and busy volunteer with the Huron
Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association. He was one of the
directors and this year co-ordinated the
food for the event. Previously for
several years he chaired the special
events committee.
Few would argue that when there
was a community person needed,
Wayne would be the one to call on.
But it was a role he took on personally
for 40 years, that perhaps brought the
greatest joy to people. Many a child sat
upon his knee as he represented Santa
Claus at annual parades and
gatherings. For years, his festively
decorated home was the setting for
“Santa’s Workshop” where he invited
youngsters to come visit and share
their Christmas wishes before leaving
with treats in hand.
Wayne was recognized for his
selfless dedication to community in
1986 when he was the second recipient
of the Citizen of the Year Award for
Brussels and area.
Professionally Wayne was a road
superintendent with Huron County
before retiring recently.
Wayne was the beloved husband of
the former Hope Zurbrigg. He was the
dear father-in-law of Lisa Lowe of
London and the proud Papa of Skylar.
Wayne was the dear step-father of Deb
and Steve Rathwell of RR2, Brusselsand Tim and Donna Prior of RR3,Brussels. He was the dear brother ofAnn and Jim Bosman of Winthrop,
Murray and Ruth Lowe of Brussels
and his adopted sister Seva Irvine of
Port Huron. He was the loved brother-
in-law of Peggy and Ron Hugill of
London, and Lynn and Tom Thorne of
Thamesford. Wayne will also be
fondly remembered by good friends
Patti Sue and Gunars Simsons of
Cambridge. He was the cherished
nephew of Isabel Workman and Ethel
Brewer both of Brussels. Also left to
mourn his passing are his step-
grandchildren, Nathan, Taylor and
Emily Prior and Kelsey and Cody
Rathwell, his many nieces, nephews,
great-nieces and great-nephews.
Wayne was predeceased by his son
John and his parents Jack and Mary
Lowe.
Cremation has taken place.
Friends were received at the
Schimanski Family Funeral Home,
Brussels, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 24. A celebration of
Wayne’s life was conducted at
Melville Presbyterian Church on
Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. Sandra
Cable officiated. She took everyone on
a ‘sleigh ride’ journey through
Wayne’s life and his enjoyment of
good times.
As a tribute to Wayne, his niece
Tracy McLennan sang To Where You
Are, followed by the hymn Amazing
Grace. The Brussels United Church
choir’s anthem was Blessings.
Remembrances of Wayne were
given by his sister Ann, his
granddaughter Skylar, his nieces
TracyMcLennan, Tina Hoelsher and
Nicole Noble and his nephew John
Lowe. Wayne’s favourite hymn, Mine EyesHave Seen the Glory, ended theservice.
Wayne’s horses, Pat and Mike,
escorted him by carriage to the
Brussels Cemetery for the interment.
Carrying floral tributes were
Wayne’s step-granddaughters, Kelsey
Rathwell and Emily Prior.“Well done good and faithfulservant.”As expressions of sympathy,
donations may be made to Brussels
United Church or the London Regional
Cancer Centre.

At the Oct. 20 meeting of Morris-
Turnberry council, a Belgrave
couple received an assurance council
will discuss their drain problem with
the municipality’s insurance
company but were unable to get a
promise of fast action.
Mike and April Irwin appeared
before council complaining about
mould problems in a John Street
home, caused, Mike Irwin said, by a
blockage in a municipal drain off
their property which is preventing
draining of their property.
Irwin said he had appeared before
council to tell them of the problem
on Aug. 12. On Sept. 5, it had been
found that the blockage of the drain
is not located on his property.
“Why are we still not fixed six
weeks after the fact?” he wondered.
Mayor Dorothy Kelly told him
that the municipality had been told
by its insurance company to stay out
of the situation.
Irwin argued that the blockage is
on the road allowance or he would
fix it himself. “It’s a matter of
digging down four feet to fix the
drain,” he said.
Nancy Michie, administrator clerk-
treasurer, said she’d been informed by
road staff that there is no evidence the
municipality had caused the drain
blockage.
Mayor Kelly promised to talk to the
insurance company and try to speed up
the issue. “Right now the insurance
company is telling us to stay out of it.”
According to the council’s agenda
the issue was scheduled for discussion
in the closed session at the end of the
meeting.
