An award-winning presentation
on water was repeated at the annual
meeting of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture in
Seaforth, Oct. 23.
Megan Schlorff of Hanover, a
Grade 10 student at Walkerton
Sacred Heart High School won three
gold medals at the Canada-wide
Science Fair for her project “Let the
River Flow”. She told those at the
meeting that her interest in water
quality issues stemmed from the
Walkerton water crisis.
For her study, she took water
samples in fall and again in spring
from the Saugeen, Pentagore and
Pine Rivers to test for E. coli levels
and nitrates. She also tested tap
water from 50 homes with wells to
see if there were dangerous nitrate
levels, and conducted a survey of
1,000 area residents to learn about
their habits in using antibiotics and
other medications and their method
of disposing unused medicines.
All of the river water samples
showed E. coli contamination with
the highest level in the Pine River
and the lowest in the upper reaches
of the Saugeen near Holland Centre.
This area also had the most forest
cover and the least farming activity
because of poor soil quality.
She took her water samples to the
University of Waterloo where she
learned how to analyze them with
the help of a graduate student.
Tap water samples showed that all
wells had trace levels of nitrates but
all were below the allowable level
for drinking water.
Her survey of the habits of
residents involving drugs showed
women were more likely than men
to dispose of unused medicines
down the toilet or down the drain —
probably because they’re more
likely to be cleaning up, she said.
In a video presentation she
argued that pharmaceuticals can
adversely affect fish and other water
life. Use up all prescriptions and if
you have leftovers, see if your
pharmacist has a program that will
take them back for disposal. Do not
flush them down the drain, she
pleaded.
