THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008. PAGE 13.
Last week was a busy week and
there were a few special events that I
missed reporting.
It was Olive Clarke’s 95th
birthday and she had special visitors
for an afternoon. Her sisters Evelyn
Carter, Florence Nesbitt and Ina
McGrath as well as sisters-in-law
Helen Williamson and Kathleen
Williamson stopped by.
They had a wonderful afternoon
and enjoyed cake and ice-cream
together.
Olive was married to the late
Albert Clarke and farmed on
Beechwood Line before retiring to
Atwood.
They had two children, Bert of
Atwood and Mona Hutton of
Listowel.
Congratulations to newlyweds
Jason Gulutzen and Melissa Elliott
who were married at Duff’s United
Church, Walton last weekend. The
reception was held at the BMG
Community Centre following the
evening wedding.
Jason is the son of Mike and
Dorothy Gulutzen and Melissa the
daughter of Murray and Barb Elliott.
The happy couple is residing on
Fisher Line.
It was a 25th wedding anniversary
for Keith and Kathy (McTaggart-
Achilles) Schaeffer in Stratford last
weekend. The family welcomed
guests in the afternoon at the River
Garden Inn for a social time and
well wishing and then later a family
celebration meal was enjoyed.
Mother Marie McTaggart of
Huronlea, along with Murray and
Ruth Lowe, John Lowe and Mike
and Nicole Noble attended and Mary
Huether, Brian and Dianne Huether
dropped in for the social afternoon.
Keith and Kathy now live in
Thornhill.
The next party was a 65th birthday
party for Ron Williamson at his
house. Ron’s wife, Dorothea along
with family members, planned the
surprise and invited nearly 70 family
and friends to enjoy an afternoon of
socializing and of course a delicious
meal.
Get-well wishes go out to Carrie
McLellan who was involved in a car
crash on the weekend. The crash
happened at the Blyth intersection
where many accidents seem to
occur. Carrie and her friend suffered
some minor injuries.
We wish Mary Mann a speedy
recovery after falling last week. I
believe she has suffered a broken
wrist/arm and has a cast on. Speedy
healing wishes go out to her.
The Brussels community lost one
of its most dedicated and respected
members this past week with the
passing of Wayne Lowe. Our
deepest sympathies are extended to
Hope and family and to Murray
Lowe and Anne Bosman and their
families.
Wayne was a wonderful man who
spent most of life being a true
promoter and supporter of his
hometown of Brussels. For nearly 40
years, the Santa Claus parade would
not have been the same without the
jolly figure of Santa Wayne along
with Mrs. Claus, his mother Mary
Lowe until she was no longer able.
For many years, Wayne created
Santa’s worship, and welcomed the
many children of Brussels to his
Christmas wonderland.
I remembered the first time I met
Wayne was at the Brussels fastball
tournament over 32 years ago. He
was the guy out raking the diamond
and lining it between the games.
Every game. He was always
welcoming and friendly to all teams
participating in the tournament as
well as being a friend to the umpires
who for many years either camped
near the ball park or stayed at
Wayne’s. He was an all-around good
guy.
Taking early retirement from the
Huron County road crew, Wayne
was left with plenty of time to look
after his draft horses, be a driver for
the Mennonite folks and friends, be
one of the Town Criers for the 125th
Homecoming celebration, be on the
board of directors of the Thresher
Association and still have time for
travelling with Hope, helping family
and friends and helping out at many
other community events. He had the
Lowe sense of humour and zest for
fun and he had no qualms about
dressing up as Miss Flossie Bell
Snap for the 135th Homecoming
kickoff party.
Wayne was a co-chairman for the
celebration and was adamant that in
coming years a celebration be held
to bring the people of the village
together to celebrate our good lives,
our past, our present and the future
of Brussels.
We celebrated FunFest this past
July and it was Wayne’s hope that
this celebration be held yearly. It
will not be the same without Wayne,
as he was our leader, but I’m sure
someone will step forward to ensure
the celebration will continue in
memory of Wayne.
Again, our deepest sympathies to
the family from all of those whose
lives were touched by Wayne.
The Chesley Saddle Club met at
the Walton Hall on Saturday evening
for their annual meeting. There were
over 25 in attendance and enjoyed a
delicious potluck meal before the
meeting part of the night. A social
time followed the meeting. Judy
Emmrich was the hostess for the
evening.
There were lots of folks that
dusted off their poodle skirts and
polished up their dance steps to go
back to the fabulous 50s to celebrate
with Gerry and Anne Ryan on
Saturday evening. It was a full house
and a great party to celebrate their
50th wedding anniversary with
family Paul, Chris and Mike and
families.
The Brussels Legion hall was
decorated beautifully in black, gold
and white with old 33 records, hula
hoops, pictures and fun 50s. Gerry
and Anne greeted many of their
guests at the door before the family
made presentations.
Daughters-in-law Cheryl and
Kathy Ryan related the stories of
Gerry’s and Anne’s lives through the
last 50 years. Pat Nolan had the
pleasure of telling some of the many
stories involving them on behalf of
their friends.
Wanting music that the Ian Wilbee
Orchestra had played from years
gone by, Keith and Gloria Wilbee
were asked to bring together an
orchestra.
The crowd really enjoyed dancing
to some of the great old songs
provided by musicians Keith and
Gloria, Bob Mann and Marie Flynn,
as well as square dancing while
Marie’s grandson played the fiddle
and a friend called.
The crowd enjoyed late lunch of
sandwiches and anniversary cake
and thoroughly enjoyed the
wonderful evening. Congratulations
Gerry and Anne.
I had a nice weekend away
visiting some relatives. I have eight
female cousins on my mom’s side of
the family and a few years ago we
decided that we should get together
for a girls’ weekend. We had the
privilege of having the use of a
friend’s cottage at Sauble Beach for
the weekend.
Although only five were able to
attend, we had a wonderful time
catching up on each other’s lives,
relating old stories of growing up
and adventures at Grandma and
Grandpa’s.
A cold and windy weekend, we
settled into the comfy cottage with a
warm wood fire burning and ate,
drank, snacked and talked until late
into the night.
It was a lovely time together and
we look forward to next year’s
already.
Celebrating birthdays to finish off
October were Teresa Baan, Tanner
Leslie, Dan Taylor, Murray Dennis,
Shannon McGavin, John Steffler,
Liam Sutcliffe, Brent Alexander,
Janine Knight and Mackenzie
McGavin.
