Blyth Atom Local League opens season in ListowelBlyth Atom Local League took tothe ice to begin another season ofhockey, Oct. 20 against Listowel. The Bulldogs controlled the puckin the Listowel end for the next threeshifts. The Listowel goalie waspeppered by a multitude of shots.
Blyth had them on their heels and
things were looking good, until
suddenly Listowel grabbed a loose
puck at centre and were off on a
breakaway. Goalie Franklin
Marshall kept the score at zero.
Colton Rodger grabbed a loose
puck in the second period and fed a
nice pass to Cameron Gauthier infront, who was in great position toscore but was denied. At the mid-point of the second Blyth playersfound themselves pinned in theirown end. Listowel players grabbed aloose puck and sent a blast to the
back of Blyth’s net making it 1-0 for
Listowel.
After some back-and-forth action
Blyth again saw a scramble in their
end. Marshall was under siege and
made several big saves but a
Listowel player flipped one to the
top shelf to increase their lead.
With only one minute gone in thethird, Patrick Franken grabbed a nicepass from Curtis Weber and strode inover the Listowel blue line. Hereached the left face-off dot andfired a hard low shot that beat theListowel goalie to bulge the twine.
Weber, Jeremy Wilts, Craig Raynard
and Gavin Workman put forth their
best efforts and would not allowListowel close to their goalie for anyscoring chances.As time ticked away Gauthier senta pass to Rodger who fired a wickedshot at the net. The shot was deniedbut a juicy rebound sat in front of the
crease. Owen Andrews saw his
opportunity and fired it over the
goalie to tie the game.Jeff Gordon won the face-off andfired a pass to Brett Glousher whocarried the puck over the opponent’sblue line and sent a hard shot at thenet. Franken found the loose puckfirst and slammed the rebound into
the back of the net and made this a 3-
2 victory for Blyth.
The Redmen Junior Boys
volleyball team defeated league
leading Stratford St Mikes 25-17 in
the opening game of their series. The
win is the first time in recent
memory that CHSS has defeated St.
Mikes in volleyball.
Veteran Kirby Cook of Blyth
played extremely well on defence
and serving with three aces. Second-
year player Jeff Plaetzer and rookie
Riley Ward helped CHSS dominate
net play during the game.
Middle blockers Luke Harrison
and Tyler Black, from Blyth,
blocked countless spike attempts by
St. Mikes. Adam Cronin and Matt
Chambers, both from Blyth, played
exceptionally well as backrow
diggers and passers.
The team ended the series by
losing 23-25 in a tense final game
against St. Mikes.
The Redmen continued their
exceptional play against the
Goderich Vikings in the second set
of the day. Goderich is currently the
third-ranked team in the league. The
Redmen were able to play three very
close games against Goderich losing
two heart-breaking contests in extra
play by scores of 31-29 and
26-24.
Next week the team looks forward
to finishing the season strong before
entering the playoffs.

The Blyth Novice Bulldogs
travelled to Brussels on Friday night
to take on the Bulls.
Brussels jumped out to a early lead
with two goals by Avery McArter
and Noah Terpstra. Picking up
assists were Cameron Gibson, Sarah
Strome and Nolan Johnston.
Carson Richmond replied with one
to get the Blyth back into the game
by the end of the first.
Brussels added two more in the
second to head into the third with a 4
- 1 lead. Scoring were McArter and
Gibson. Assists went to Jack Pipe
and Brett Stevenson.
This didn’t stop the Bulldogs, The
squad came on strong in the third
period. Parker Gibbings scored
assisted by Drew Van Wyk. Van Wyk
then helped the cause by scoring two
of his own with an assist by Parker
Gibbings to tie the game at the 10-
minute mark. Richmond scored to
put Blyth in the lead from a pass
from Michaela Rodgers. Damien
Allen increased the lead even further.
Terpstra scored to bring the
Brussels goal count to five. But
Gibbings scored another with help
from Van Wyk to complete the come
from behind win with a final score 7-
5.
Jarron Thompson was strong in the
Brussels net.
Brussels next game is Friday, Nov.
7 against Drayton at home.
The Blyth Bulldogs went on to
host the Elma Logan Wildcats
Saturday for the season home
opener.
The team came out ready to play.
Leading the team with strong
goaltending was Jake Gulutzen. The
forwards all worked hard in this
contest to take the win.
The team played well, winning 4-
1. Scoring for Blyth were Richmond
with three and Ethan Coultes with
one. Assists went to Rodger,
Gibbings and VanWyk.
