It costs $1 to play. Random teams are drawn up before the games begin and play usually lasts until about 10 p.m. There are small prizes to be won and there’s always lots of fun. The accessibility committee met on Tuesday evening with John Rutledge to go over some of the ideas he has come up with for making the Branch accessible. The group discussed the pros and cons of each proposal and offered suggestions on other options to be investigated. There were a few things that need to be clarified as well and committee members will check into these items. The committee will meet again next month. The Friday night supper of roast beef was enjoyed by a great crowd. This week will be chicken breast. The next week is Halloween and there will be no supper that week. The Saturday afternoon euchre had only 6 1/2 tables of players. The top team of the day was Glenand Eileen Sellers with 75 points.Coming in second with 73 pointswere Delores Howatt and Dorothy Dalton. The third-place team was Joyce Hodgins and Norma Strong with 67 points. The low prize of the day went to Helen Dobson and Mabel Willis. The lucky lone hand winners for passes were Lloyd Appleby and Ariel Woods. Euchre is every two weeks. The first Zone dart even twas held on Saturday in Exeter and it was double darts. Participating from Brussels were John Harrison and Deb Cann. They had a good day and finished eighth to advance to District play in the new year. There are more sports sheets at the Branch for sign up and to check the dates of upcoming events. Drop in today. The District convention was held on the weekend in Elmira. Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald attended the president’s meeting on Saturday and Comrade Glenn Bridge attended with her on Sunday for the convention. It was an interesting day with afocus on how to promote the Legionas more than just a place to drink.Branches need to make sure the public is aware of all the youth programs, senior programs and the many donations that are given each and every year to various community groups, schools, sports and hospitals, etc. Another misconception about the Royal Canadian Legion is that the Legion supports war. This is not true. What the Legion supports is the brave men and women who serve their countries and upon their return, the Legion becomes an advocate for them and their families. The Legion is many different things to many different people and we here at Brussels Branch would like to be what the town needs. If anyone has any suggestions as to what you would like to see at the Branch, tell an executive member, drop into the branch or drop us a line at Box 128. Remembrance Day is almost here and the annual poppy canvass of the town will be held on Nov. 1.Comrades are asked to be at theBranch at 9 a.m.Drivers are needed to take Cadetsto areas of the town as well as Walton, Cranbrook and Ethel. The canvass is for a couple of hours in the morning. Come out and help out the Branch with the Legion’s number one mandate of perpetuating the importance of Remembrance Day to young and old and that the sacrifices of the many will not be forgotten. The Sunday night dance had over 90 in attendance. The Country Versatiles did a great job as usual. Dances are every two weeks. Helping out for the evening were Ross and Cora Alcock with the absence of Howard and Audrey Hackwell. The Cadet Corps was away at Peacekeepers Park for a training weekend. They were learning survival techniques which were put to the test when a Cadet from another Corps went missing in the bush. The girl was found within an hour, but it was an excellent lessonfor the Cadets to experience thereality of conducting bush searchand how they would handle thesituation if they were lost. Their return home on Sunday evening was delayed an hour but they report it was a good weekend. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2008.
