The Citizen, 2008-10-23, Page 30What will bug you the most thiswinter if you get influenza? Missingwork? Spreading the illness to yourchildren? Spending two to sevendays in bed? Coughing for weeks?Senior public health nurseChristina Taylor says people can
help beat the bug this year by getting
their flu shot. “People with influenza
can easily spread the flu to those at
risk for serious illness. This group
includes babies and young children,
the elderly, or anyone with medical
conditions like asthma, kidney
disease, diabetes, cancer, or heart
problems. It’s very important that
everyone over six months of age get
a flu shot.”
The Huron County Health Unit is
holding free flu clinics across Huron
County starting at the end of
October. Watch for newspaper ads or
go to www.huroncounty.ca/health
for a full list of clinics.
Influenza, commonly called the
flu, is a highly contagious viralinfection of the nose, throat andlungs. It causes a sudden fever, sorethroat, chills, dry cough, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Mostpeople who get the flu are sick fortwo to seven days, but can feel tired
and weak for up to two weeks. In
some cases, the cough can last for
weeks, too.
The flu can cause pneumonia and
other complications that can require
hospitalization. The bug can even be
fatal. The flu spreads very easily
from person to person in tiny
droplets from the nose and throat.
Health experts say that the best
way to avoid getting the flu is by
getting the flu shot. Taylor says the
flu shot is a safe, effective way to
protect yourself, your family, your
classmates, your co-workers, and
your friends from getting the flu. It
is free for people who live, work, or
go to school in Ontario.
People cannot get the flu from theflu shot. The shot does not contain alive virus.Taylor says other ways to stayhealthy during flu season and tolimit the spread of the flu includewashing your hands often and covering your mouth when youcough or sneeze. “You should alsoeat a well-balanced diet, get regularexercise to keep your immunesystem strong, and stay home fromschool or work when you feel sick.”Locally there is a clinic at Grey Central Public School, 84925 EthelLine, Ethel on Thursday, Nov. 6from 3:30 to 7 p.m. There is one inGoderich at the Legion Oct. 29 andDec. 4, at Howick Central SchoolNov. 25 and at Clinton Legion, Oct.30 and Nov. 27.PAGE 30.
