These reports provide important details that may impact whether ornot you purchase a particular vehicle or the price you’re willing to pay, such as the vehicle’s odometer readings, branding information and accident disclosure. “Surprisingly, many consumers get a vehicle history report after they have made their vehicle purchase. At this point, it may be too late to takeaction if you are concerned about the findings, especially if you bought the vehicle privately,” says Brenda McIntyre of OMVIC, the motor vehicle industry’s regulatory body. To order a vehicle history report, you will need your vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (or VIN, shown on the ownership permit) or a Used Vehicle Information Package, available from the Ministry of Transportation. What to look for on a vehicle history report: Odometer readings:Look for discrepancies between the odometerreading and the car’s age or visible wear and tear. Branding:Vehicle brands indicate whether a vehicle has been severely damaged in the past. Determine if the vehicle has been branded and what the brand means. Liens:If a lien is held on a vehicle and the debt is not repaid, thecreditor may have the right to take possession and sell it to recover the money owed. Ensure the vehicle is free of liens.
