Scrimgeour’s Food Market was honoured for the second year in a row with Ontario’s highest retailer honour, being awarded the Foodland Ontario Award Of Excellence earlier this month. Scrimgeour’s was one of 37 stores honoured at the ceremony, but just one of five to take home the Award Of Excellence. The store took home the Platinum award for all seasons retailer for the second straight year, earning the Blyth store the Award Of Excellence. The Foodland Ontario Award of Excellence is presented to the top- scoring Ontario retailers in each store size category that have won the Platinum Award for two years in a row. The Platinum award for all seasons recognizes merchandising excellence with Ontario-grown commodities through the three growing seasons, spring, summer and winter. Owner Don Scrimgeour was not able to attend the awards ceremony in Toronto, however, he says he feels very good to be honoured by the province. “It certainly feels good. We’vealways had a personal mandate to bring as much Ontario product and certainly as much local product as we can to our store,” he said. Scrimgeour said he was fairly confident his store was the smallest one honoured with the top prize at this year’s awards, another point that makes him proud. Scrimgeour gave much of the credit to the store’s produce manager Wendy Gaunt. “Her commitment and enthusiasm to her displays is really great,” he said. Judges reviewed thousands of photographs of display categories. There were over 900 entries, which is a record number for the program. The awards have been in existence, recognizing grocery retailers for 21 years. “This year’s winners have done an outstanding job promoting fresh, local Ontario products,” said Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “When consumers buy Ontario foods, they’re helping our farmers, our economy and our environment.” A little love Cassidy Shannon, three, daughter of Darryl and Julie, couldn’t resist a little squeeze for one of the stuffed toys on offer at the big home party sale in Blyth Public School on Saturday. The event was a fundraiser for Living Water Christian Fellowship. (Vicky Bremner photo) Euchre is starting for the winter on Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall. BLYTH UNITED CHURCH Greeting at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Oct. 19 were Joann MacDonald and Randy Fraser. Ushering were Joann MacDonald and Cliff Snell. Guest pianist was Amanda Swartzentruber. The UCW meeting is on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. in the church parlour. The choir favoured the congregation with the anthem Lord Lift Me Up. The call to worship and the prayer of approach followed the first hymn All I Really Need. The gospel lesson was from Luke 5: 1- 11. Rev. Gary Clark asked the people sitting on the south side of the church including the choir, to move over to the north side. When everyone was seated he gave the front row balls of string. He asked people to tie these strings onto the string that was in front of them, then pass it back to the row behind. When everyone had made their tie and passed it on back it represented a fisherman’s net. Everyone sang I Will Make You Fishers of Men. The children took the net downstairs with them for their time of fellowship. The hymn You Have Come to the Lakeshore was sung. Rev. Clark’s message to the adults was Make Me Your Fisher and This Church Your Net. Rev. Clark asked what was different about sitting somewhere else in the church, then he asked the ones who didn’t move what was different. Change is good, he said. Jesus asked Simon Peter to move his nets to the other side of the boat and they caught so many fish they had to ask other boats to come and help them. He told a story of a church that had a new subdivision built next to it. The church became filled every Sunday but the givings didn’t change. When investigated the newcomers thought that the government paid the bills or that they gave the same collection as they gave when they were a child. Many had never been taught to budget and didn’t know what a budget was. We must be better fishers of men and be ready for change, he said. When we do something new we become a good net. The hymn Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling was sung followed by the offering and The Fruit of All Creation. The last hymn was Will You Come and Follow Me. Everyone was invited downstairs for lunch and birthday cake for the October birthdays. Oct. 26 is anniversary Sunday and the evening is Rev. Clark’s Convenanting Service.
