HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-10-16, Page 29North Huron council have no
problem with being a good
neighbour. They just can’t do it at
the expense of their own.
Bob Zubel, facilities manager of
the Lucknow and District Sports
Complex attended the Oct. 6
meeting of council to ask a favour.
He explained that when they started
up their ice plant this year, they were
suprised to discover a leak in the
brine system. Then upon further
inspection they found that the chiller
is also damaged.
What this means, said Zubel, is
that 17 minor hockey teams are
going to need ice time until the
equipment can be repaired, some of
which has been booked in North
Huron.
“I’m asking council to waive the
two-week cancellation policy they
have due to schedules and also if
you would kindly consider a minor
rate reduction.”
He noted that Ripley arena, where
ice time has also been booked, has
reduced its fee and Paisley has
promised to after Thanksgiving.
Councillor Alma Conn said there
would probably be savings for the
Lucknow Complex as there would
be no operational costs during the
repairs. She asked Zubel if he knew
how much that might be.
Zubel said he expected the repairs
would offset any savings.
Councillor Archie MacGowanoffered empathy but no handout. “We certainly respect the situation
you find yourself in. But we find
ourselves with shrinking revenue
and I would have difficulty asking
our ratepayers to subsidize Lucknow
people.”
Director of facilities/recreation
Pat Newson said it would be a
challenge for her to change the rules
for outside users. “Mostly I would
have a hard time facing our regular
users. It would be hard for us at the
front line.”
One place she did find a
compromise was a two-hour block
on Sunday. “To try and be good
neighbours.”
Council passed a motion agreeing
to the this. Otherwise the rate will
remain the same and the rest of the
cancellation policy will stay in
place.

The Happy Gang Seniors are
reminded of their invitation to attend
the seniors’meeting in Blyth on Oct.
22 to hear John Hardy speak.
As can happen with a weekly
paper, something written on a
Sunday may have changed by the
time you read this column on the
following Wednesday. I received a
call from Marlene Armstrong and
learned she was home from hospital
as I was writing last week’s column.
It was good news to learn she is
doing well.
Congratulations
