One more year The Centre for Applied Renewable Energy (CfARE) received a Trillium grant last week, contributing just over $45,000 to the centre’s business plan for the coming year. Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, second from right, was one of the presenters. “With the help from the Foundation, the new business plan will allow CfARE to develop its capacity and governance, as well as explore the economic opportunities for renewable energy efficiency in the rural community,” she said. “The linkages and partnerships developed by the program will promote the development of the skills and a resource base that will enable this to happen.” From left, Huron East mayor Joe Seili; chair of the grant review board for the Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth branch of the Trillium Foundation, Kathleen Pletsch; Mitchell and Huron East councillor and program manager, David Blaney. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Look for students from F.E.Madill Secondary School to becollecting this weekend for afundraising project through Free The Children, where they hope to visit a developing country to build a school. This weekend students will be at Scrimgeour’s Food Market in Blyth, Foodland in Brussels, Lucknow and Wingham. Students will be collecting at Valu-Mart in Wingham several weeks down the road. The goal is to raise $8,500, which would build one school in Kenya, China, India or Ecuador. Mary-Ann Cruickshank from F.E. Madill is leading the initiative, which began at the end of the last school year, with a meeting on the very last day of school. “It’s something that came out of a PD Day teachers went to last April and the main speaker was from Free The Children,” Cruickshank said. “As I was walking out, they were talking about how you can raise the money to sponsor a village or build a school and of course, I latched onto the idea of building a school.” The next meeting was in June, when Cruickshank called a teachers- only meeting to discuss the idea further. Nearly 30 staff members attended the meeting. “Free The Children is a wonderful NGO (Non-Governmental Organization). It’s a wonderful way to teach the students about global citizenship, which is something we’re trying to do all the time,” she said. “We’re such a global village nowand these students live in a smallerworld than any generation ever has. They know there are starving kids inAfrica, but it’s so remote, they don’tever think about it and they alsodon’t think about how lucky we are to live here.” Currently, there are just under 50 students signed up who are seriously considering the trip. Free The Children allows 26 people on a trip, so there will have to be cuts as nearly 10 teachers have shown interest in going as well. Fundraising officially began at the beginning of September, however, as part of the initiative, scratch cards were purchased totalling $1,000 to aid with fundraising. That total has nearly been reached, but Cruickshank says she refuses to acknowledge any profit until they get into the black. Free The Children supplied the school with a chart and 85 bricks, each of which is meant to represent $100. Once the initial costs have been covered, bricks will start going up. Cruickshank says that in addition to global awareness, this will teach her students that debts must be paid down before profits can be made. Next on the agenda are some arts nights with the school’s drama and music students to raise funds and hopefully a garage sale in the spring. Cruickshank hopes the trip will take place late next summer, but says she has no control over where and when they will be sent to build their school. Fundraising also has to be completed before travelling takes place.
