Here’s hoping for a few good days
of October. You know the kind I
mean, the sun shining, a little breeze,
just sweater weather, made for leaf
kicking.
As I’m writing this on Monday it’s
just that day, so I must get out and
use it all up. Autumn is that
necessary season – the one to plan
and rehash and dream, all the whilegetting the nest ready for winter.Tucking the flowerbeds in, checkingthe tools and stashing them awayand popping a few bulbs in theground all give the mind time toconsider the past year and thechanges that have happened. The ball parties have kept lots offolks busy the past few weeks.
Dress-ups, games and hunts as well
as lots of food have made for some
fun gatherings until next year.
This past week Bluevale’s Clif
Brewer died. Clif and Joan were part
of the Hetherington kids growing up
time on the farms in Morris.
Margaret Jenkins and Margaret
Vincent, our mothers, grew up in
Blyth and brought that friendship
into their marriages. The times wespent in each other’s homes werealways full of life and laughter. Doyou suppose it had something to dowith eight boys and two girls in aspace. My imagination cannot evenstart a Christmas dinner with thattribe.Sitting in the Bluevale UnitedChurch for Clif’s funeral, my
brother Bill and I decided that 50
years may have slipped away, but the
memories stay pretty clear. Kathy
Workman, a family friend of the
same vintage, took us on a historical
trip, with good stories of Clif and
Joan’s life. Cars, jobs, dates and the
arrival of much loved children
David, Heather, Mark and Sarah
were much appreciated. After any
funeral, lots of antique thoughtssurface as life gets reviewed and thebest gift that we can leave on thisearth is lots of good memories. Goodjob Clif. It’s turkey time, and the childrenwill be landing from far-off placesnext week. Darn, that means it’s timefor removal, like all the summerstuff and dust balls that are nearly
permanent in our living space. Oh
well, I’m sure it will be worth it.
Next week it will be great to see
them all, but right now the thought
of housework while the sun shines is
not sitting well in this brain.
Take care of yourself and enjoy
your Thanksgiving, however and
wherever you celebrate.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
By Brianne Oldridge and
Meagan Dolmage
The first month at Brussels Public
School has gone well and now we
are in October. Thanksgiving is just
around the corner and along with it
is the cooler fall weather.
All of the classes are busy with
autumn projects, preparing for cross
country at Grey Central and
Halloween.
Mrs. Metzger’s kindergarten class
is now learning about the letter I and
the number 3. Since Thanksgiving is
coming up they are starting to learn
more about it and sharing as well.
The Grade 1s and Mrs. V. are
exploring greater numbers in math.
In science they are learning all about
their five senses. Also they are using
their hands in their fall art projects.
Mrs. McKee’s Grade 1/2s are
enjoying working with their Grade 4
reading buddies. In class this month
they are working on exploring
numbers in math and animal
classification and life cycles in
science. In writing they are learning
about characters, setting, problem
and solutions.
With the upcoming elections, Mrs.
Graham’s Grade 2/3s are learning
about them. They are sending their
votes to CBC, and in turn they will
send their results back to them. They
are also learning about plants and
they will be doing artwork with
leaves.
Mr. Stewart and Mrs. Dawe’s
Grade 3 students have pen pals with
Mr. Uhler (a teacher that used to
teach at BPS) and the class he
teaches in Listowel. They send
letters back and forth about
themselves.
In math the students are learning
how to add and subtract double
digits and how to tell time. They are
looking at maps of Canada in social
studies and in science they are
looking and learning about isopods,
snails, mealworms, worms and
things in that category.
Mrs. McGavin is trying new
things out on her Grade 4 students.
In math they are having a contest
called mathletes to declare the
champion of math. Also in math
they will start learning about place
value. Language is all about learning
to make deep meaningful
connections and to write with a main
idea.
The Grade 5/6 class is working on
a few things this fall. Mrs. Lazenby
says, they are doing graphing in
math. In health they are learning
about self esteem and also body
image.
Mrs. Rodgers is teaching her
Grade 6/7 class something new in
gym. They will be learning how to
play a game that comes from
England, cricket, after they wrap up
their soccer unit.
In math, the Grade 7s are learning
about how to add and subtract
decimals. In art they are doing fall
mosaics.
Mr. Westra and his Grade 7/8s
have finished the book Freak the
Mighty. In history/geography they
did a unit about New France. In art
they are doing a week-long self
portrait of themselves. They are also
doing reading bingo.
Oct. 14, Grades 4-8 are going to
the Blyth Festival to see the
production of The New Canadian
Kid.
Oct. 22 is picture day for KA-
Grade 8 and Oct. 23 is KB.
