More than 100 people lined The Square’s western block between West and Colborne Streets on Sunday eagerly awaiting the arrival of nearly 15 talented and budding thespians before heading inside to take in a first-run movie premier at the Park Theatre. At the premier of Rolling Out The Red Carpet the audience was among the very first to view some of the best movie and television reenactments that 13 of the area’s most dedicated young actors have to offer. The Sept. 28 showing was the result of months of hard work by the Serious Fun! Theatre Company’s Going Pro program. The debut was designed to be a fun way to introduce the community to the talents of the program’s students. “The show went amazingly well, I’m so proud of these girls,” said Serious Fun! founder and instructor, Shannon Scott. The Going Pro program, aimed at young girls aged eight to 16, spent part of their summer training with a nearby film company to shoot a slew of scenes from popular movies and television shows. They experienced life on a professional film set, as they filmed over 50 scenes with Film Directors Joshua Ferguson and Florian Halbedl of Juicy Fusion Films, a London-based film production company that focuses on independent film projects in Canada. As the result of their filming and in addition to the Rolling Out The Red Carpet skits, the Serious Fun! actors produced two short films, one of which, titled Unspoken Words Don’t Lie, was accepted into the London Fringe Film Festival in 2007. The Going Pro program is currently working on a feature- length documentary. Going Pro is a program developed and designed by Scott through the Serious Fun! Theatre Co. It has been designed to train youth and provides the skills necessary for becoming professional actors. Scott said that students are taught how to break out of “over-acting” and instead “live truthfully in the moment” while onstage. The Going Pro program consists of a 40-day summer training session, combined with weekly privates and monthly group sessions, and features guest teachers from the professional acting world. PAGE 26. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2008. Serious Fun! rolls out the red carpet Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh council members decided at their recent meeting to have information looked into to create a bylaw that takes the current Ontario list of noxious weeds and add two organic offenders, giant hogweed and velvetleaf. The current list is as follows: common barberry, European buckthorn, bull thistle, Canada thistle, wild carrot, colt’s foot, dodder, goat’s beard, Johnson grass, knapweed, qilkweed, nodding thistle, poison hemlock, poison ivy, proso millet, ragweed, yellow rocket, Russian thistle, Scotch thistle, tow thistle, cypress spurge, leafy spurge and tuberous betchling. Giant Hogweed, which ACW council has dealt with in the recent past, is a tall plant with a large white flower and a wide, hollow stalk. The plant produces a poisonous substance that, when mixed with UV light, can cause skin to have boil-like growths that will burst and can result in scars that last five to seven years. Velvetleaf is a highly competitive plant that can take resources away from other plants, such as crops. It produces many seeds and can spread quickly.Councillor Carl Sloetjes said,“Wecould set a precedence for Huron- Kinloss; they could do the same thing. (Giant hogweed) is really bad in Lucknow, and it is coming downstream. By doing it one at a time, maybe we can stop it further upstream. I’m surprised it’s not more predominant (here).” Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek said it’s important to deal with the issue, but noted it may be difficult because of the population of the weeds. “(Velvetleaf) is everywhere. Many farmers have it. It’s just one of those weeds that keeps coming back.” In the end, council decided to act now, versus waiting for the plants to possibly make it on to the province’s list. “We’re willing to prepare to pass a bylaw, to have our own weed list and have those two added to our list. It will be complaint driven, or if we feel there’s a need to have it done, we’ll authorize the right ministry, if the land owner doesn’t do it first,” Van Diepenbeek explained.
