All kinds of sports memorabiliawere displayed on the communiontable at the front of Knox UnitedChurch, Belgrave, as thecongregation celebrated a SportsSunday on Sept. 28. Various trophies, uniforms, balls,
skates, bats and medals that
had been donated from the teams
in the area, and won by some
of the children present, added
to the atmosphere for the
service.
Jim Barnes welcomed everyone to
the service and gave the
announcements, then asked Melissa
Snyders to bring in the children.
As they entered waving pom
poms, following Melissa in
sweater and helmet up the aisle on
her roller blades. When they
arrived at the front they gave three
cheers for Knox.
Jenna Hopper lit the Christ candle.
Mrs. Snyders conducted theservice off the top of a hockey net, as a pulpit. Following the call to worship, a hymn and gathering prayer, the senior choir sang the anthem, My Song tothe Lord, with Elizabeth Procter
at the organ. Lila Procter
accompanied the hymns with her
guitar.
The congregation was then asked
to share some sports stories, and a
number of them did so. Everyone
sang, Take Me Out to the Ball Game
and did the wave.
For the children’s time, Melissa
asked about sportsmanship,
and what being a good sport
meant. She showed them a
short clip of the video, Cars
where the one car stopped to
help a broken down one. She
explained that when they stop
to help others, they are being
good sports.Melissa then read a contemporaryreading, The Lord’s Baseball Game, author unknown.Blair Bieman had his name pickedto try a basketball toss, and wasgiven a pot of flowers for his
attempts.
The topic for Melissa’s sermon
was,What Kind of Fan Are You? She
told stories of various well-known
sports figures, and pointed out
whether they were good sports or
not.
She commented how faithful and
dedicated sports fans are; how
far they would go to support
their favourite team, and not
worry about the cost to do so.
She said if all were as dedicated
and loyal to God, they would
show to others that they were a good
fan of God’s.
Everyone then rose and did some
exercises for the seventh-inningstretch.The offering was received byShawn and Chris Cottrill, as Melissaplayed the well-known hockey cheeron the organ. The closing hymn was, They Will
Know We Are Christians By
Our Love, and the benediction
was sung. Mrs. Snyders then
thanked everyone for taking part,
and making the service so much
fun.
She asked the blessing of the
lunch that was prepared for
everyone. Hotdogs, chips, cupcakes
and ice cream drew everyone to the
basement for a time of fun and
fellowship.

UCW hosts Ladies Night Out
The Belgrave United Church
Women invited the women of the
church to a Ladies Night Out, on
Thursday, Sept. 25 in the church
basement. Pat Hunking, president,
welcomed everyone and read a
poem, Harvest.
The UCW Purpose was recited.
Mrs. Hunking then introduced
Emily Phillips of Blyth, the
guest speaker for the evening.
Mrs. Phillips invited everyone
to take a few moments for a
relaxing time, then asked the
group how many of them had
taken time to relax during that
day.
Her theme for the evening was
Time, with various examples of
readings encouraged everyone to be
sure and take time for themselves.
She asked them to plan at the
first of every week, to set
aside a time during that week,
for a time for them to relax,
and just look after themselves.
Sheila Nixon then thanked
Mrs. Phillips for her encourage-
ment.
Mrs. Nixon then introduced
Nicole Coultes, who accompanied
herself with her guitar, and sang
two numbers, One Moment in
Time and I Pray You Will Be
My Eyes. Mrs. Nixon thanked
her.
Kim Walker opened the worship
with a call to worship on thanks, and
led in prayer. She read scriptures
from II Corinthians.
Following a hymn, Nancy Folkard
and Mrs. Walker read a meditation
on the Melody of Life. They
demonstrated this by the use of a
score of music, with the treble and
base cleft, and how it resembled our
lives.
Sandra Dorsch and her daughter
Amanda received the offering. Mrs.
Folkard closed the worship with
prayer.
The minutes of the previous
