Well I’ve just found another
favourite place in the world. We’ve
just returned from two weeks
checking out the “near north” –
that’s what the tourist books call the
area north of Parry Sound. A very
large land mass with lots of trees and
water and each area seems to have
its own personality.
Provincial parks are our idea of a
good time so we hit Gundy – greatfor canoeing, then Kilarney – goodfor hiking and finally Marten Riverfor pure bliss. We watched the treesturn colour and it was so quiet youcould actually hear the leaves drop. Each time I return to home sweethome I have to ponder the beautyand character of the Canada that I’ve
been privileged to see.
A drive up Turnberry Street shows
that life does not stand still. Kangs’
has been sold as has my neighbour
Rebecca’s house. The new paint job
on the old 5R’s building is a very
nice surprise.
So here’s to the future and the
changes that come.
Welcome October and all the
surprises that will come our way.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

The Brussels Legion executive
meeting was held on Tuesday
evening at 7 p.m. Matters
concerning the operation of the
Branch were discussed to be
brought forward at the general
meeting. Fifteen Comrades were in
attendance.
The minutes from the summer
executive meeting were reviewed
and passed. The financial report is
showing a positive trend and the
year-end report was received.
Committee reports were heard with
dates for the upcoming fall sports
events being posted.
Cribbage is the first Zone event,
so drop in and sign up if wishing to
participate. The Branch will host
one Zone dart event and will have
four Huron County dart days.
The poppy chairman Catrina
Josling reported that the supplies for
the upcoming campaign have
arrived.
The veterans’ service officer
Mabel Glanville reported that no
one needed an appointment with the
provincial service officer this
month.
The canteen chairman reported
that some organizational changes
are being worked on for the canteen.
House chairman Glenn Bridge
reports that the cooler doors are in
need of repair or replacement and
prices will be sought from different
sources for the next meeting.
The accessibility committee
reports a meeting is set with John
Rutledge to discuss his findings.
The fish fry chair reports that
there is only one more event
planned for this year at this time.
Youth chairman John Lowe said that
the poster, essay and poem contest
for Remembrance Day material will
be arriving at the schools shortly. He
is urging parents to encourage their
children or grandchildren to
participate.
There were a number of requests
for donations and several were
approved by the membership.
The membership approved an
application. It was noted that a
number of Comrades have been in
to pay their dues during the early
bird drive.
A Comrade has generously made
an offer to donate a flat screen
television. It can be used for power
point presentations for seminars and
can be used with laptop computer
technology. The offer also includes
the donation of the laptop computer
for treasurer and secretary’s use.
The membership thanks Comrade
Miller for his generous donation.
The Friday night supper of
chicken breast was enjoyed by a
great crowd. This week will be roast
pork. The evening also included
entertainment for a coffee break
fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s
Society. We thank pianist Karen
Cardiff and organist Betty
Campbell. The music lasted for a
half hour and the collection box
received over $50 for the night. The
Branch will match the donation and
forward the donation.
Comrade Gordon Stiles is in
Stratford hospital. We wish him
improved health.
Just in time for the busy
entertaining season, there’s a new
catering business in town.
Justine King, who recently
graduated with a diploma in
culinary management and a
certificate in chef’s training from
Fanshawe has opened Simply
Charming Catering in Brussels.
The decision came about after
front-line work. “I was one of those
who said I was not going to own my
business. But once I got into
restaurants to work I decided I
needed some control.”
King, a graduate of F.E. Madill
Secondary School, said she’s always
been interested in cooking and loved
being in the kitchen helping her
grandmother even as a young child.
“When I was considering options
after high school someone said
jokingly why not be a chef. Then
another person said it, this time
seriously, and I thought, ‘Well, why
not be a chef?’.”
Like many young people, King
didn’t inititally think of returning
home to begin her career, “But as we
know plans change,” she said.
Once she realized she wanted to
be in charge and where that would
be, King needed to consider the type
of business that would be right for
her. A family friend suggested
catering.
King said their focus at this point
is for small business or family
gatherings of up to 12 people, hosts
included. “The point is to take the
onus of responsibility off the host,”
said King.
Simply Charming will offer some
set menus. “That way people will
have a choice. They will be things
people are familiar with but with
pizzazz,” said King.
People can contact King by e-mail
at j_king15493@fanshaweonline.ca
or by calling 519-887-9649.
