Mounsey was part of this year’s
Blyth Greenway Memory Garden
remembrance service, Sept. 21.
Among those present for the sixth
annual service were members of the
OPP, including Inspector Dan Grant
who spoke briefly during the
service. Mounsey, who was also a
member of the Blyth Fire
Department was further recognized
by chief Paul Josling.
Chair Bev Elliott said that
Mounsey’s mother Shirley Stanway
had approached her last year to ask
what they might do for her son.
“Over the winter we both thought
about what would be a nice
remembrance for David. This year
we put in a new flowerbed to the east
and Shirley and Colin purchased a
beautiful stone and had it inscribed.”
The stone has been placed in the
garden against a backdrop of
daylilies, grasses and hostas. “Thank
you to Colin and Shirley for this
beautiful remembrance of a
wonderful man and son,” said
Elliott.
In her address, Elliott read out the
names on the Tree of Life. Since last
year the names of Harold and Adelne
Campbell, Carl and Kathleen
Longman, Everett Scrimgeour, Peter
Cook and Doug and Shirley
Richardson have been added. Also,
she said the friends and neighbours
of Joe and Sheila Hallahan
purchased a leaf in memory of
Sheila’s mother Clara J. Ducharme.
“When we started the garden
seven years ago, we thought it would
take years to fill the leaves on our
Tree of Life, but we have, I believe
three left that have not been
engraved. Before long we will be
adding another Tree of Life.”
The service began at 2 p.m. with
words of welcome from the
Greenway Trail committee chair
Doug Scrimgeour and from
councillor Greg McClinchey on
behalf of North Huron.
Cheryl Cronin and Avon Corneil
sang In the Garden and Whispering
Hope, accompanied by Lynda
McGregor.
Remembrance was given by
Pastor Les Cook.
Updates to the garden were
highlighted as well. These include
additions to the gardens as well as the
replacement of the stone pathway with
limestone dust and mulching aroundthe trees. Local funeral home director MichaelFalconer donated some daylilies to thememory garden. Elliott recognized the committee ofNellie Mason, Gerrie Bos, Jean Nethery and Ula Richmond who helpmaintain the gardens. Also, she saidthe village employees keep the grasscut and assist when needed. Donations can be made for thegardens through the local funeralhome or by contacting Elliott.THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2008. PAGE 25. Officer among those honoured at service

Recently two members of the
Burling family, Lorna Burling and
Darlene King, relatives and best
friends, visited Blyth to look for
information about their kin.
They were amazed to see Lorne
Burling’s picture in the mini
museum in front of the Blyth
Memorial Hall with others who were
part of Blyth’s 161st in the First
World War.
Through personnel of the Blyth
Festival, they were able to see
Lorne’s picture with those of others
from the Blyth Methodist Church in
a frame hung at the rear of the
Memorial Hall Auditorium. They
were also pleased to see his name on
lists of soldiers displayed at the
Memorial Hall.
They met Janis Vodden, collector
of Blyth history at the Blyth Branch
of the Huron County Library where
they exchanged information and
received help from the librarian, Pat
Brigham.
On a second day, the women
returned to Blyth with many artifacts
collected by Lorne Burling. They
allowed Brock and Janis Vodden
who keep the repository of Blyth
History, to copy many of them. The
Voddens had found a picture of a belt
woven by Lorne Burling while in
hospital in England c.1940. It was at
http://www.trenchart.org/Embroider
edBelts.htm It is from Trench Art:
An Illustrated History, by Jane
Kimball.
Lorne Burling was born and raised
in Blyth. He was the son of Charlie
Burling, jeweller, and Nellie Smith.
He began work as a blacksmith
apprentice here and was trained as
same by the army while stationed in
England. He served in both World
Wars.
He had two sons, Tom and Lorne
Jr.
Lorne Burling Sr. made his home
in Toronto after the war. His
discharge papers declared his service
“exemplary”. He had carried a
wounded fellow soldier from the
battlefield, a distance of about 10
miles, although wounded himself. It
was during his recovery that he made
the belt mentioned above as part of
his recuperative therapy.
The relatives who visited here
were touched by the responses they
received from people in the village
as they walked about and ate in local
restaurants,” said Janis Vodden. One
of the ladies remarked that it is no
wonder that this village is so vibrant
when people take such a keen
interest in their history. They feel as
though they are part of Blyth now
and look forward to return visits.”
