HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-09-18, Page 2The changes in each season seem
to bring with it, a specific agenda.
While each new spring, summer, fall
and winter is welcome, the changes
required in our lives are often not. For
right now we trudgingly and
grudgingly check our calendars.
Autumn brings the season of
planning and preparation. The
carefree days of summer are tucked
away and the call of the wild tells us
to check home and hearth inreadiness for thing to come. And so we check things at home, atchurch and with our special interestgroups and committees. Decisionsabout should and must and maybelater are made and before you knowyou’ve graduated into full blownautumn. The fundraising committee for our
new library is making a nice dent on
the goal. Like any major project,
especially in small communities, the
opinions for and against are well
known. We live in a democracy and
the good of the many is the
responsibility of all.
In the 1970s the need for a
replacement arena was heard. There
was lots of chat and opinions, but a
few actually took it on, as a need for
community betterment. You know
who you are.
This is plowing match season andthe one I recall best is the one inMorris where many volunteersheaded by Cardiffs and Semples andCampbells to name a few, workedtogether to raise major funds to makethe arena a reality. The next big dealwere sewers and then the pool. Herewe go again. The library is in our midst, it’s
good for your circulation to get
involved and it makes community so
much more interesting. So here’s to
the fundraising for our new library.
We were at a very good funeral last
week. Now that’s something you
don’t say often. It was time to say
goodbye to Gord Workman. Family
and friends did it in a way that Gord
would have enjoyed. Tell it like it is,
add food, a story or two, mix in good
friends and sit back and let it happen.
When someone dies, memories of
the part they played in your life cometo the surface. Gord was part ofBrussels when I came here as a newbride and it was only after he and Idecided the village council neededour advice (1978) that I really got toknow him.So my memories were mine and allothers in the Brussels United Churchlast week had their own. We
remembered the stories he could tell,
his determination, the stories he
caused, the commitment to family
and cause, his sense of humour and
unique way with words and his love
of life and people.
So long Gord.
The fall fair is now over for another
year but you still have a chance to
head to Teeswater to take in the
plowing match. Have a good time.
Enjoy the days of September.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Stratford E-Waste is holding four
collection days throughout the area,
including Brussels and Clinton.
On Sept. 20, between 8 a.m. and
noon at Brussels Public Works and
Clinton Public Works, volunteers will
be on hand to assist in unloading
electronic equipment from vehicles
in hopes that people will clean out
their closets and basements.
They’ll be looking for old
computers, cell phones and other
electronic gadgets that have long-
since been replaced.
Since it’s illegal to dispose of
electronic equipment in Ontario
landfills, the drop-off will help to
divert hazardous electronic waste
from Huron’s local landfills. This is a
large environmental concern, as
Ontario residents dispose of over
90,000 tonnes of old computers,
printers, printer cartridges and cell
phones each year.
All items will then be shipped to
Stratford E-Waste’s parent company,
Greentec Inc.’s facility for
processing.

Ready, set, go!
The books are closed on this year’s Terry Fox Run in Brussels and nearly $7,500 was raised.
Despite some early reluctance due to the rain, the people of the village came out in full force
to support cancer research. These young sprinters worked the majority of their morning at the
Brussels Optimist Clubhouse, the run’s launching point before pounding the pavement
themselves. From left: Nick McArter, Avery McArter, Olivia McArter and Ben Newell. (Shawn
