After working in a sow barn/office environment for the past five-and-a- half years, Rainville was ready for a different challenge. Offered the “wonderful” opportunity to continue an already-established business, Chocolates and Fudge in Brussels, she took it. The business’s previous owners were moving, which would mean closing the store if someone didn’t take it over. “I hated the idea of seeing a storefront empty,” said Rainville. She expects few changes to thebusiness, though there is now avariety of candies besides the ice-cream, chocolates and fudge. “Withmore to come.”She invites everyone to stop in to visit and browse through the quilts, bags, and other items in the store. Hours are 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.Sunday to Thursday and 10 a.m. -9p.m. Friday and Saturday. These will change in October withthe store closed Sunday andMonday. The rest of the days Chocolatesand Fudge will be open from 10 a.m.until 6 p.m. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008. PAGE 21. With the resignation of medical officer of health Dr. Beth Henning on Aug. 1, there is some of the old and some of the new for county council to consider. At the Sept. 3 meeting, councillors were updated on the agreement for obtaining interim coverage for a medical officer of health with Middlesex-London Health Unit. Dr. Graham Pollett and his associate Dr. Bryna Warshawski have agreed to provide coverage. However, nurses who had been providing clinical services in the sexual health clinic under medical directive written by Dr. Henning, will not be able to continue as the two interim doctors don’t have the expertise to provide the necessary consultation. Coverage will be based on a monthly fee of $9,000 plus applicable out-of-pocket expenses. Additional compensation will be required in any major event. Goderich councillor Deb Shewfelt wondered if the $9,000 is a retainer. Chief administrative officer Larry Adams was not sure, but said that this should be explained when the agreement is formalized, hopefully this month. It was action taken by the health board chair, Goderich councillor John Grace, at the Aug. 18 meeting, that raised some councillors’ ire. It was noted in the minutes from the health, ambulance and social services committee that the chair “was disappointed with the warden’s interpretation of Dr. Henning’s departure. The chair stated that, in his opinion, it was absolutely the direct result of the Thomas Report and the relationship with administration. The warden was denied the chance to reply to the chair’s comment.” South Huron councillor George Robertson said he was outraged by the chair’s actions which showed a disrespect for the warden and council. Bill Dowson of Bluewater agreed. “What he did shows a complete lack of respect.” Grace was not present at the council meeting. Warden John Bezaire, however, gave the matter little significance, saying, “While I appreciate the comments, be assured that this current warden has pretty thick skin.” That there was still some ill will, was clear after he asked if there were any further comments. “None that I can say,” said councillor Joe Seili of Huron East. Brussels’ Chocolates and Fudge gets new owner Keeping it going With the former owner moving, Sharyn Rainville was given the opportunity to take over Chocolates and Fudge in Brussels. (Bonnie Gropp photo) When considering accessibility and county buildings, North Huron councillor Neil Vincent is wondering about the middleman. At the Sept. 3 meeting of county council, Vincent asked how the inspections being done by the Huron County accessibility advisory committee relate to the Ontario Building Code. “Is there a liaison? We are moving towards setting a standard and I believe we need linkage.” Committee chair, Morris-Turnberry councillor Dorothy Kelly said that there is a chief building official on the committee. Chief administrative officer Larry Adams said he didn’t know of any formal “back and forth” between the committee and the province. “I know there is significant disparity in the needs expressed by the handicapped and in the building code.” Councillors discuss MOH Business Directory Offering a full range of services: auditing, accounting, business planning, income tax planning, personal financial planning, computer and management services.
