Trinity Church, Blyth, and
St. John’s Church, Brussels
A minister answered his telephone
to hear a woman’s voice request,
“Send six cases of vodka to my
house, please”.
The pastor recognized the voice as
that of one of his parishioners.
Gently, he replied, I am your
minister.”
He expected an apology by her for
dialing the wrong number. Instead
she retorted, almost angrily, “WHAT
ARE YOU DOING AT THE
LIQUOR STORE?”
That lady misunderstood the
minister’s intent. He didn’t want to
make her feel bad, he just wanted to
tell her that she had dialed the
wrong number.
Today more than ever with our
fast-paced society, there are more
misunderstandings between people.
I have always thought that we
need less misunderstanding and
more understanding, especially in a
world surrounded by instant
technology.
I was reminded of this fact when I
was doing some marriage
preparation. The groom-to-be was
unable to make the appointment but
I still spent time with the bride-to-
be. I was telling her about some of
the principles of NLP (Neuro
Linguistic Programming) which is
that some people receive and send
messages in different ways. Some
people are more visual, some are
more auditory while others are more
feeling.
I explained all this to her and then
she sat there with her mouth open in
shock. She went on to tell me the
story about her husband- to- be
always pointing out the things that
she changed in her kitchen, in her
living room and in her washroom.
She looked at me and said, “I always
thought he was nosy because he was
constantly pointing out those visual
changes that I made in my apartment
since his last visit. Now I understand
that he wasn’t nosy at all but that one
of his strongest ways to learn is
through his eyes. Therefore, he
always points out the differences
that he sees. It had nothing to do
with him being nosy and more to do
with his learning style.”
Misunderstandings happen
because we don’t understand
someone else’s way of
communicating. It reminds me of
the city councillor who was giving aspeech at a town hall meeting. Hegot carried away and talked for twohours. Finally, he recognized what
he had done and said, “I’m sorry I
talked so long. I left my watch at
home.”
A voice from the back of the room
replied, “There’s a calendar behind
you!!!”
The councillor was an auditoryperson and the style of the person atthe back of the room was visual.Have you ever said to yourself after
talking to someone, I really don’t
understand what he was talking
about? Of course you don’t because
you were both talking in two very
different languages.
Let me return to the lady who
called her minister’s number byaccident. We communicate a lot byaccident, not really knowing theother person’s style of
communicating. Unfortunately this
leads to misunderstandings.
Just think what would happen ifwe learned each other’s style ofcommunicating. We would have lessmisunderstandings and more
understanding.
Think about it.
