The smiling face customers at
Belgrave Variety are seeing these
days is a familiar one.
The former Becky Logan grew up
across the road and worked at the
variety store during high school and
college. Now married, she and her
husband Dave Bartman have
purchased the store from Ray and
Penny Sheppard.
Having moved from Fordwich in
July they have also purchased a
house in the hamlet.
“We wanted to start this business
together and come home,” said
Becky.
Dave, who also operates Solid
Ground Landscaping, will be
helping at the store, but it’s
primarily Becky who will be behind
the counter.
“I really enjoyed this when I
worked here before. I enjoyed
visiting with all the people and the
business part as well,” she said.
With a grand opening set for Oct.
4 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m., the
Bartmans are hoping to have their
new ideas and plans in place by
then. In addition to some interior
refreshing of the building, there are
as well several inventory changes in
store too.
“We will have fresh baking come
in on Friday mornings from
Harriston. There will be breads,
buns, pies, donuts and muffins,” said
Becky. “We will also have pre-made
bread mixes and cereals. Just take
them home and bake.”
Fresh produce is coming in on a
weekly basis from a company in
Walkerton.
There will also be some gift items
including candles, as well as
specialty chocolate during holidays.
The store will offer a line of
handmade greeting cards and some
stationery needs.
“We are going to bring in a bigger
selection of candy for the kids, too,”
said Becky.
Little ones can also have fun
filling their own cones with a hands-
free soft ice-cream dispensor.
Coffee is freshly brewed each day,
“perfect with those muffins and
donuts,” she adds.
The Bartmans hope to be able to
keep their prices competitive and
plan to use local suppliers as often
as possible.
Their goal is giving the
community what it needs. “With the
price of gas people are looking at
ways to cut transportation costs. We
want to get good quality food so
people will be able to stay home and
shop locally,” said Dave.
Belgrave Variety is open from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday
and noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Starting Thanksgiving they will
begin closing at 7 p.m. through the
winter.

The County of Huron has
established the Sunday preceding
Sept. 11 as the Annual Day of
Remembrance for all our local
volunteer firefighters, emergency
service personnel and law
enforcement officers.
As we approach the anniversary of
the tragedy that struck the United
States on Sept. 11, 2001 we’d like to
take the opportunity to recognize
our own local heroes who protect us
everyday through the year. We pray
that the world will never have to face
such a tragedy again.
