The Citizen, 2008-09-11, Page 2The changing of the season is one
of the many good things about living
here in Huron. Just when you think
summer should go on just a little
longer, the geese sound the alert, the
wind changes and a smell enters our
lives.
Autumn is about to begin.
As much as we wish, control of
time and weather is better not in the
hands of we mortals. Each day is a
gift. Each sunrise another chance. Each waking to a new day is a spinof life’s wheel just for us, an openopportunity to use the hours andweather handed to us. So Septemberwhat shall we do?Don and Susan McNeil have a newplace to call home. A spiffy newhouse was gently placed on their lotlast week, just waiting for all thelittle added details that change a
house into your home. Enjoy all the
memories of moving a lifetime
across the street into your new home,
Don and Sue.
Plans are in the final stages for the
Brussels fair next week. The fair is
the time to celebrate all the good
things agriculture brings to our lives.
As a way of life, the influence of
farming and agribusiness on our
community is often not
acknowledged but it’s there every
day and once a year we all stop andgo to the fair as our way of sayingthank you for your part in feedingus. The many volunteers and the fairboard have the details all in hand andKari Bell will be there to make uslook good as our Ambassador. Sosee you at the fair. One experience I had last weekwas losing my wallet. Now that
causes one to stop and wonder about
all the numbers we carry in our
possession. With the possibility of
tracking down all the right folks in
all the right departments to tell them
about my sad state of lost identity, I
kept thinking that there are many
nice people in our area and I was
sure that one would return my lost
wallet. I am so relieved to tell you
that Barry from Belgrave is now on
my hero list.
To all the folks who do a gooddeed, especially my Jane StreetBarry you bring joy and much reliefto our world. Thank you very much.School reports are coming in.Classes, courses and teachers arebeing graded already and I’mhearing pretty positive stuff. So on toanother level of learning and anothergood year. The Optimist Club has the Terry
Fox signs on the lawns to remind
you of next Sunday’s event. Walkers
and sponsors are always welcome in
support of cancer research that will
be sure to benefit someone we love,
often us. Use Sunday to support
those around you.
Any time now it’s time to tidy
outside and get the bulbs planted in
anticipation of another season yet to
come.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It’s time to get back into routine at
the Brussels Legion Branch.
The week started off with the
Cadet leaders having an
organizational meeting to prepare
for their year. Members of the Cadet
Corps will return for the year on
Sept. 9 and welcome interested
youth between the ages of 12 and 18
to join them. They may come out
any Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. to
check out what Cadets are all about.
Cadet training includes learning
about discipline, leadership, respect
for others, drills, survival training,
camping, sports and much more.
The Cadets are continuing with
their fundraising efforts of collecting
popcans and returnable bottles. They
can be dropped off behind the
Branch on Tuesday evening for
pickup by the Cadets. If there are
any adults out there who would be
interested in helping out with
Cadets, please call the Branch and
we will forward your name to the
leaders.
The Friday night suppers will
resume this week. The first supper
will be a roast beef dinner. Supper is
from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. and will be $7.
Comrades John Lowe and Rick
McDonald attended the youth and
PRO meetings in Hensall last week.
The Branch was the venue for the
celebration of Leo and Rita
Deitner’s 50th wedding anniversary.
The hall was decorated in red, white
and gold for the open house held in
the afternoon. Rita even had her
beautiful wedding gown on display.
The guests were treated to a lovely
luncheon table of fruit, veggies and
dips from epicure, meat and cheese,
squares, punch and more provided
by the Deitner families.
Following the open house, the
family and friends enjoyed a roast
beef dinner served by the Branch.
Leo and Rita have three children,
Brian, Kevin and Cathy and along
with their families had a very
wonderful day.
Donations for the food bank were
the gifts of choice for many
attending and there were four large
overflowing containers collected for
the food bank.
Congratulations to Leo and Rita.
The early bird draws for the
Branch elimination draw were held
on Saturday evening. The lucky
winners were Bob and Tracey
McDougall, Eluned McNair and
Jane Zwep. There are still tickets
available for the big draw on Sept.
20, so get into the Branch, Murray
Lowe’s barbershop, George of
Brussels or see Comrades to get
yours.
Our Branch is saddened to hear of
the passing of an over 60-year
member of the Branch. Comrade
Gordon Workman passed away last
week. Comrade Gord served in the
Navy from 1939 - 1946 as a Naval
Petty Officer. He was a Branch
member for 63 years and served as
Branch President in 1953. Our
condolences are extended to the
Workman families.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
saw 14 tables of players looking to
be winners. The first-place team was
Tom and Eileen Sloan with 76
points.
Earning second place prize were
Rita and Verna and close behind in
third are Glenn Sellers and Ed
Stewart. The low prize of the day
was tie and went to pairs Helen and
Betty, and Willis and Betty. Lone-
hand prizes went to Lorna and Ken.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd on hand to enjoy the
music of The Red Rascal Band. Over
90 danced the night away and
enjoyed the lunch served. There is
no dance in two weeks.
