(Shawn Loughlin photo) North Huron not ready to waive rental yetNorth Huron councillors want alittle more information beforeconsidering a request to waive the rental fee for Memorial Hall for an arts and cultural event. Council received a letter in their Aug. 18 agenda package from Heritage and Cultural Partnership co-ordinator Rick Sickinger. Sickinger is in charge of theorganizing committee for aCelebration of First Nations, to beheld Sept. 27. The event showcasessome of Canada’s premiere FirstNation writers, dancers, drummers and theatre. The day of programs ends at the Festival in the evening with a theatre performance by Red Sky Productions, a nationally-recognized First Nations theatre company, which has travelled the world, saidSickinger. The organizing commitee iscomprised of representatives fromHeritage and Cultural Partnership,Huron County Library, The Village Bookshop in Bayfield, Blyth Festival and First Nations advisors. As a not-for-profit group with limited financial resources, they hoped that council would waive the total rental cost of $605. Councillor Greg McClinchey opened discussion saying he liked the idea of the exhibition, but “am still not sure of the implications.” He asked whether the two councillors on county council had heard of this and when they responded no, said, “If they haven’t approached the county for help I’m somewhat surprised by them coming here.” Councillor Archie MacGowan felthe needed more information. “Thisis not a group we’ve had anyinteraction with.”Clerk-administrator Kriss Snellsaid that while Heritage and Cultural Partnership was unfamiliar to council, Blyth Festival was supportive of the program. Councillor Alma Conn questioned why council needed any more information. “I have no problem saying no to this. Our theatre is in need of repair and I don’t see how we can cut rates and keep upgrading. I’m not agreeing to defer because it’s still going to cost the same. I’d say deny the request- end of story.” “You’re saying that money spent here could pay for a couple of steps at the Hall?” qualified reeve Neil Vincent. MacGowan concurred about the shape of the building, but felt itwouldn’t cost anything to simply getmore information, see if the countyhad been approached for financialsupport, before making thedecision. “County money is my money too,” said Conn. Knowing more, however, was important, argued McClinchey. “If this is something big that’s going to bring people into Blyth, well I like to see Blyth’s streets lined with people. It costs nothing to do an exploration and come back in a couple of weeks to reach a decision.” Deputy-reeve Murray Scott, McClinchey and MacGowan voted to look further into the request, while Conn and councillors Murray Nesbitt and James Campbell were opposed. Vincent broke the tie in favour.
