The Citizen, 2008-09-04, Page 12By Rev. Sandra YuleWalton-Bluevale Pastoral Charge“Jesus loves me this I know for theBible tells me so. Little ones to him
belong, in his love we shall be
strong. Yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus
loves me, yes Jesus loves me for the
Bible tells me so”. (Voices United
Anna Warner 1970)
The question for me today is:
Would I believe Jesus loved me…
… If I were a six-year-old child
suffering from leukemia whose
father entered America to become an
unpaid employee of a labour
contractor nicknamed El Diablo for
his cruelty.
Did you know that coerced and
forced labour situations in the U.S.
benefit us all. As consumers and
stockholders we fatten the profits of
dozens of American food and
clothing chains by wanting cheap
products. (Nobodies: Modern
American Slave Labor and the DarkSide of the New Global Economy byJohn Bowe, Random House 2007). … If I were a woman who was
forced to work in the most appalling
of conditions.
Millions of teenagers spend over
billions annually on clothing alone.
They can afford to do this because
much of the rest of the world is
paying for it.
“When you purchase a toy at Wal-
Mart, do you ever imagine teenage
women in China working from 7:30
a.m. to 2 a.m., 18 1/2 hours a day,
seven days a week, in 104°F
temperatures, handling toxic
chemicals with their bare hands, and
paid as little as 13 cents an hour?”
(The True Cost of Low Prices: The
Violence of Globalization by
Vincent A Gallagher, New York,
Orbis Books, 2006)
… If I were one of the children
from Uganda who dies from a
preventable disease because only $3
is spent per person on health care
and $17 on repaying debt owed to
richer nations.
… If I were one of the 800 millionpeople who is malnourished eventhough there is enough food to feedeveryone in the world.
If I were one of the 1.2 million
children trafficked annually; one
million into the sex industry.
(Unicef)
… If I were one of the missing or
murdered Canadian Indigenous
women that other Canadians are
indifferent to.
A shocking 1996 Canadian
government statistic revealed that
Indigenous women between the ages
of 25 and 44, with status under the
Indian Act, were five times more
likely than all other women of the
same age to die as the result of
violence. (Amnesty International
Stolen Sisters)… If I were sick from the world’slargest cause of illness—lack of safewater and sanitation. We here in
Canada spend millions on bottled
water even though we have access to
free, clean and safe drinking water in
our own homes. The Spokesman
Scott Tabachnick for Coca Cola Co.
which produces Dasani bottled water
justifies this by saying “It’s hard to
bring your kitchen sink with
you”.(Globe and Mail Aug. 19,
2008)
… If I had to sell my labour inorder to survive because I didn’tcome from the class of people whoown society’s productive property
and therefore couldn’t establish
relations of domination and
exploitation over the class of non-
owners. (Social Inequality in
Canada, Curtis, Grabb, Guppy,
Prenctice Hall, Canada, 1993)
And the list goes on and on.
Yes I might believe Jesus loved me
if you believed him and loved your
neighbour as yourself.
