HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-08-28, Page 36Anthony Rota, chair of theNational Liberal Caucus touredHuron-Bruce with federal candidateGreg McClinchey last week.
Rota, who is also the MP for
Nipissing-Timiskaming, went on a
tour of Bruce Power in Kincardine,
the salt mine in Goderich, dined with
several local agriculture leaders, had
breakfast with the Wingham
Chamber of Commerce and saw
Innocence Lost at the Blyth Festival.
McClinchey said he has been
bringing federal politicians through
Huron-Bruce to get the words of its
residents out to as many politicians
as possible. Rota said tours like his
are essential in building policies
with a fair state of mind.
“Paul Steckle and [McClinchey]
have been very good at bringing the
representation of the people to
Ottawa and it’s always nice to get
other people into your riding, so they
can see it first hand,” Rota said.
“You always get a better idea that
way, and when you’re developing
policy, you want as much experience
on the ground as possible. So you’re
out talking to people and when you
go back to develop policy, you have
to make sure the fingerprints of as
many people across the country are
there.”
The leader of the Liberal party,
Stéphane Dion, was recently in
Huron County and participated in
the first ever Mayor’s Council in thearea, with hopes of bettercommunication between levels ofgovernment and real change. This is something, Rota says, theLiberal party has been supportive offrom day one. He’d like to see more
communication from the top down
throughout all levels of government,
something he says is not happening
right now with the current
government.
“When you see co-operation
between different levels of
government, you can really see
things start to build up and that really
makes a difference when you see
federal co-operation with municipal
government,” Rota said.
In his time in Huron-Bruce, Rota
saw many similarities between
Huron-Bruce and his riding. He says
both ridings are geographically-large
with spread-out, small communitiesfull of hard-working citizens. Hisarea also has Lake Nipissing whereHuron-Bruce has Lake Huron, andhis riding is also very rich inagriculture.Economic development and
infrastructure are issues that he has
to deal with on a daily basis, similar
to Huron-Bruce.
“Economic development is not a
handout, it’s a helping hand up. It’s
helping people develop what they
already have and one of the things
we have to look at when we want to
develop industry and we want
business to come to our community
is infrastructure,” Rota said.
“Whether it’s internet, sewer and
water or phone lines, all of these
things have to be in place. In order to
compete, you have to have all of
these things in place.”

university or college.”
Listeriosis is a severe but rare
infection caused by eating foods
contaminated with the bacteria
Listeria monocytogenes. The
elderly, pregnant or
immunocompromised people are at
higher risk for severe illness.
If you have eaten any of the
recalled product and become ill or
have been ill with fever or serious
illness, contact your health care
provider and mention your possible
exposure. Some people experience
only mild flu-like symptoms.
The illness may start suddenly
with vomiting, nausea, cramps,
diarrhea, severe headache,
constipation, or fever. Some
infections are severe, with
symptoms of a high fever, muscle
pain, and mental confusion.
Symptoms can occur from three to
70 days after eating foods
contaminated with Listeria.
