With great excitement and
anticipation of school in September,
60 children graduated from Rural
Response for Healthy Children’s
Kinderoo – School Readiness
Program on Aug. 14.
As the young children proudly
wore their own crafted graduation
caps and received certificates, their
parents, moms, dads, grandparents,
brothers, sisters and caregivers
joined in the celebrations at the
schools in Clinton, Exeter, Goderich
and Wingham.
“During the six-week program,
our Kinderoo graduates had
an opportunity to form a
strong foundation for lifelong
learning. Many parents
also experienced a positive transition
into the routine and expectations of
school. Most children are excited to
start kindergarten and go on the bus
to school”, says Laura Rogers, the
manager of the Kinderoo – School
Readiness Program.
Getting ready for school is more
than getting the backpack ready.
Children need to be well rested
and well fed before going to
school. Routines about bedtime and
eating help families adjust to
early morning starts for school.
Parents can provide a key to
the solid foundation for a
healthy and productive life by
teaching and modelling healthy life
choices.
Teachers and children thrive in a
safe, comfortable, respectful
learning environment.
For young children, being able to
communicate their thoughts, needs
and wants is important as they
explore new social, play and
learning activities. Ask your child
about what makes them curious and
enthusiastic about learning and
school.
The Kinderoo - School Readiness
Program was made possible with
funding from the Public Health
Agency of Canada, Community
Living – South Huron, Community
Living – Central Huron, The Ontario
Trillium Foundation, Service
Canada, Ontario Summer Jobs,
Corporation of the Town of
Goderich, the Corporation of the
Municipality of Huron East, and
Clinton Public School
Council.
The Avon Maitland District
School Board and the Huron Perth
Catholic District School Board
provided the in-kind donation of the
facilities. Hansen’s Independent
Grocer in Exeter and Denis
and Diane Lynch’s Food
Basics in Goderich supported
the nutrition education
activities.

A special evening of music will be
an opportunity to make a difference
in the lives of others.
A concert featuring Winnipeg
singer and songwriter Jodi King will
be held 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at Huron
Chapel Evangelical Missionary
Church, in support of a youth group
project.
In recent months, the group has
been working on a number of
activities and events to raise money
for International Justice Mission
Canada. The goal is to free five
slaves in India.
IJM began operations in 1997 in
response to the injustices witnessed
by overseas missionaries and relief
and development workers. A survey
uncovered a nearly unanimous
awareness of abuses of power by
police and other authorities in the
communities where they
served.
“It essentially is helping people
affected by bad government,” said
Annie Sparling, who is working as a
liaison between King and the church
group.
She said that $500 will cover the
cost of freeing someone sold into
bondage in India. The youth, thus
far, have raised $700. Having heard about King througha friend, Sparling said she felt theconcert would be a good fit for the
project.
“Having listened to her music and
knowing that the youth are raising
money for IJM this seemed a perfect
opportunity to help.”
About 75 per cent of King’s
music, said Sparling, is “written
from a Christian perspective, while
the rest is family friendly.”
On her website, King describes the
music she writes as “honest,
unpretentious.”
“I feel that my music uplifts
people when they hear it, that it gives
them hope to believe that every day
is a chance to begin again.”That is precisely what the youthgroup in Auburn hopes to achievewith their project. They invite the
public to attend the concert and
enjoy King’s music, while at the
same time helping to make a
difference in the life of someone less
fortunate.
Tickets are $10 and are available
at the Gift Chest in Wingham,
People’s Purchase in Goderich and
at Huron Chapel.
Donations would also be
gratefully accepted said Sparling.
