HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-08-21, Page 16The big news of Walton will be the
yearly event of Transcan and
motocross at the Lee farm. The
amateur participants for Transcan
started lining up on Monday for the
opening of the gates on Tuesday
morning at 6 a.m. A new program
for this year was the fact that all
campers were parked in a specific
way to allow emergency vehicle
access to all areas, so the process
was a little slower than other years,
but was far better in the end.
It was nearly lunch time by the
time the roads were cleared and
traffic back to normal.
It was a great week of weather for
everyone racing, camping or
working except for Friday
afternoon’s sudden 15-minute
downpour.
The groups who helped make theevent a success and received moniestowards their fundraising effortsinclude Brussels Minor Hockey,Walton Area Sports Club, BlythMinor Hockey, Clinton PublicHospital and Brussels Legion.Congratulations to the Lee familyfor another great event.Returning from a great week away
in Appleton, Wisconsin is Scott
McDonald. Scott was participating
in the 2008 ISC II World and
Tournament of Champions Fastball
Championships. He plays with the
Kitchener Outlaws team.
They began play on Sunday, Aug.
10 by defeating a team from Salt
Lake City, Utah 2-0. Their second
game was against CPI from Oswego,
New York and they won 1-0.
Game three was another close one
with them defeating Pete’s Blues
from Mascoutah, Illinois (near St.
Louis) 2-1.
The Outlaws won their pool with
their three victories to advance to the
playoff round. Their first game was
against Rude Pac from Sun Valley,
California and another close 3-2 win
advanced them to the semi-finals.
They played against another Ontario
team, the Waterdown Hammer andafter another close game, lost 2-1.The Outlaws finished fourth in thetournament and were really happy tohave done so well. Scott reports agreat week and great fastball and agreat time. The team returned lastFriday evening to Ontario.A group of local men were off toBowling Green, Indiana for the
annual tractor pull. There were about
14 of them making the five-hour
drive to enjoy the three-day event,
some for the full event while others
stopped in for only a day. There were
two tracks where the pulls were
held, with about 300 pulls each of
the first two days and then the finals
on Saturday.
Some of the men enjoying the trip
were Bill McClure, Don Dalton, Ron
McCallum, Bruno, John and
Johnathon Breacker, Gary and Larry
Nicholson, Greg Ryan, Brian Alcock
and Brad Stevenson. They report
having a great time with only a few
difficulties in losing things and
crossing the border.

On July 15 the 4-H club held its
fourth meeting at the Ryan house.
Once everyone arrived, the
leaders told members what they
should be looking for when judging
a pig. You need a nice long pig with
a full ham. It also should be a
medium size, not too skinny or too
fat.
Then they went to the barn and
had to judge a class of market hogs.
Once everyone was done judging
and reading out their reasons the
leaders gave the actual order and
their own reasons.
On July 30 they had the fifth
meeting at the Baans’ house. They
started by judging their pigs.
Leanne Ryan showed them how to
properly wash and show a pig. She
reminded members that when they
are washing pigs to never get water
in its ear. Also when showing a pig
in a competition to keep an eye on
the judge and to never touch the pig
with a hand.
They next worked in their books.
They covered the topics of
temperature, humidity and
ventilation.
The leaders told them about the
Huron County 4-H Barbecue and
auction happening on Aug. 17 in
Auburn and the 4-H judging
competition taking place at the
Seaforth Fairgrounds Aug. 12.
The next meeting will be on Aug.
27.
