The local U-16 Destroyers boys
soccer team ended its season with a
tournament in Goderich July 14 - 18.
Blyth fared well in the
tournament, but was edged out with
a loss in the semi-final game.
The Destroyers were set to play
the Goderich Blue in the first game
of the tourney on July 14. Blyth’s
Tolson Carter earned the first goal
of the game with a hard kick into the
Goderich net. Brent Drost earned the
assist. There were scoring
opportunities from both teams, but
neither team was able to score
during the remainder of the first half.
The second half of the game saw a
little more action and some great
plays by the Destroyers. Blyth’s
keeper Greg Roetcisoender made the
save as Goderich advanced on
Blyth’s net. However a Goderich
striker slipped by the defence and
chipped the ball into the net to tie it.
Matt Steele kicked the ball across
the field for the Destroyers and
Brendon Boven booted the ball at
the net. Drost was at the right place
to connect and drove the ball into the
Goderich net.
The game ended in a 2-1 victory
for Blyth.
July 15 was when Blyth met St.
Columban at the Ag Park field,
under the lights. Blyth dominated
this game and really played hard to
earn the win. Drost dug the ball
away from St. Columban and shot it
up the field. Carter accepted the pass
and drove the ball into the net for the
first goal of the game. Leendert
VanDorp earned the assist on the
next Blyth goal, scored by Forward
Austin Sjaarda.
In the second half Drost kicked the
ball towards St. Columban’s goal.
They intercepted but Jan Paul
VanDorp stole the ball, took control
and scored for his team. Carter
booted the ball up the field earning
an assist. Jessie Pot ran hard on a
breakaway and scored for Blyth. The
final score was 4-0 for Blyth.
Defensive players and goalkeeper,
Roetcisoender did a great job of
keeping the ball out of their
defensive end, really limiting the
shots on net for St. Columban.
Blyth met Wingham on
Wednesday, July 16 and didn’t play
to their potential. The first half was a
little flat and neither team could get
a goal. Wingham had two penalty
kicks but were unable to score on
either kick. Wingham scored when
they took a beautiful shot that
lobbed over Blyth’s goalie, into the
top shelf of the net. Wingham went
on to score two more goals and
Blyth took their first loss of the
tournament.
With two wins and a loss, Blyth

home team as they went down in defeat. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Brussels U-10s had a tough
week but they never gave up. The
first game was against Clinton.
Clinton was up 2-0 when Devin
Bachert finally scored.
Clinton came back and scored
again but Dalen Martin kicked one
in and Devin Bachert scored
another.
Clinton answered with two quick
ones.
Patrick Franken got Brussels’ last
goal of the game for a final score of
5-4, and the team’s first loss.
Thursday the U-10s played St.
Columban in another nail biter.
Brussels had many shots on net but
finally Kaylee Wheeler got her first
goal of the season. St. Columban
also scored and the game went into
overtime. A goal gave the game to
St. Columban.
Saturday was the final game
against Wingham. It was another
tough game and the intense heat
didn’t help. However, Patrick
Franken scored and with the time
running out, Jamie Perrault scored
his first goal of the season. The final
result was a 2-0 victory for Brussels.
However, Brussels was three
points short of advancing, in the end
they finished fourth overall for the
season.
Heads up
The Blyth U-18 player gets set to use her head, in a physical
sense during a recent game in Blyth. The contest, against
Clinton was the gold-silver match, with the final result of a
2-0 loss for Blyth and a silver medal. (Vicky Bremner photo)
U-10s suffer first loss
Brussels U-8 Pirates finished the
season with a win against the other
Brussels team, but it wasn’t easy.
The first half was back and forth
action, but in the second half Ronan
Jarrad finally got a chance to score
with Lorren Polland assisting. Their
opponents put on some steam and
scored on Hudson Smith. With
minutes left, Katelyn Wick got her
first goal of the season, so the
Pirates took home the A title.
