The Citizen, 2008-07-17, Page 17THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2008. PAGE 17. Engineer says construction on schedule
It’s summer. A time for
construction.
Working one’s way through
Brussels side streets these days can
be a bit of an adventure as an
extensive watermain replacement is
underway.
To people with front-row seats to
the performance it can often seem
one of many encores as workers
move earth, put it back, and move it
again. Trucks, graders and loaders
make tracks, tear up, and refill. It
often looks as if the job done today
is the same one done yesterday.
According to Lavis engineer
Graham Hamilton, installing new
watermains is a lengthy process,
which to make life bearable for
residents along the route, means
essentially that the workspace must
be tidied up at the end of each day.
“We have to maintain a traffic
flow,” he said, “which is why things
are dug up, refilled, then dug upagain.”The watermain process alonetakes about two weeks to complete. The main on the street goes in first.Testing, commissioning andflushing of the main are done. “We
install the main line, we install the
service, pressure test, chlorinate and
flush.”
Samples are taken before a
connection to the property lines.
“While they stand alone, we take
samples. Once they come back clean
we can connect.”
This was completed last week on
Hawke, Smith and Elizabeth Streets.
“Those houses have all been
connected into the distribution
system, so have now been taken over
by Huron East.”
Once connected, the water is re-
sampled. Last week the residents on
those streets were under a boil water
advisory which would be lifted by
the health unit following two clean
samples. “This procedure is done by
the municipality,” said Hamilton. “It
has nothing to do with Lavis at that
point.”
Finally there is side-to-side
excavation and new granular
applied, then the road is allowed to
sit for a time to make sure it will
stand up.
“Once the new gravel curls in, we
apply fine-grade gravel, then put
asphalt down to make sure it’s
settled.”
Rather than proceed on each street
at the same time, which would have
significantly disrupted travel
through town, the project is
undertaken in blocks.
“We do try to keep things as neat
and be as courteous as possible andkeep the interruptions and headachesto a minimum.”“With that being said,” addedHamilton, once we move stage tostage I won’t say we’ll be donebefore we move on but that’s what
we aim to do.”
By Tuesday and Wednesday, it
was anticipated that they would be
bringing in more gravel and start
grading on Hawke, Smith and
Elizabeth Streets. Also, there was a
possibility that the sidewalks might
be put in as well. “Then we will
topsoil and sod the boulevards.
On Alexander they have started
the watermain and storm sewer with
it anticipated that the curb will be
going in at the end of July or first
part of August.
The completion date for the entire
project is the end of August.
And the really good news,
according to Hamilton, is that right
now things are fairly much on
schedule. “It’s looking good for that
deadline.”
On a tear
There’s a lot of activity in Brussels as the watermain project continues with several streets
involved in the work. Project engineer Graham Hamilton said that everything seems to be
running on schedule and the hope is for all the work to be completed by the end of August.
