HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-07-17, Page 15THE CITIZEN. THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2008. PAGE 15.After more than a month in jail, anRR3, Moorefield man is free afterpleading guilty to four charges atWingham’s provincial court July 10.
Jason Michael Gibson, 29, was
convicted of two counts of assault,
one of uttering a threat and one of
failing to comply with bail
conditions.
Attorney for the Crown Clayton
Conlan said that on May 26 in
Wellington County, the victim and
Gibson were arguing when it “turned
physical”. Conlan said the accused
placed the victim in a headlock
during the struggle.
During this fight, Conlan said
Gibson threatened to burn down the
victim’s house. “He made another
comment that he had already dug a
hole for her.”
Defence councel Tim Macdonald
said that his client agreed with the
facts regarding the house.
Three days before this, in Huron
East the pair were arguing outside a
motor vehicle. “As she opened the
passenger sidedoor and tried to calmhim down, he put the car into gearand started driving while she waspartway in the vehicle,” explained
Conlan. The victim sustained some
bruises on her arm.
Released on bail, Gibson was told
to not have any contact with the
victim. According to Conlan, he
called her June 3 on her cell phone
and made a disparaging remark,
which was in violation of his bail.
He was arrested that day and taken
into custody where he remained until
Thursday.
Conlan said that while Gibson’s
offences were serious, he had no
record, had pled guilty and had
served a substantial amount of time
already.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter sentenced
Gibson to time served. He is on
probation for 12 months and is
prohibited from owning weapons for
five years.
DRUNK DRIVING
Adam Oliver of RR2, Brussels pled
guilty to driving while his ability wasimpaired. The 21-year-old was charged May3 in Huron East. Conlan said the
police had set up a RIDE program. “I
suppose to try to evade the police, the
accused pulled into a driveway.”
When police approached the driver
they noted signs of impairment.
Breathalizer readings were 180 and170 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. He was fined $750 and his licenceis gone for one year. Hunter gave the
accused 90 days to pay the fine.
BREACH
Michael Carriere of RR2, Brussels
was fined $100 for breaching the
terms of his probation, He pled guilty
to the charge.Conlan said the breach was a resultof the accused not abstaining fromthe purchase or consumption of
alcohol. He was charged Nov. 24 in
North Huron.
Carriere was fined $100. He has 30
days to pay.

Court newsMan released after entering guilty pleas
A handful of Morris-Turnberry
residents are looking to amalgamate
their properties into the municipality
of Huron East.
Represented by Ralph Watson,
these residents of Morris-Turnberry
on the northern and southern edge of
Brussels hope to benefit from the
municipal benefits of fire protection,
water supply and postal service
among other things associated with
Huron East.
Watson said he and the residents he
represented had not yet spoken to
Morris-Turnberry. In his written
request, Watson said that a similar
request had been made prior to the
amalgamation of Huron East.
However, at that time he was advised
that no action could commence due to
the date of the petition.
Through talking to all of the
residents involved in the request,
Watson says he has received no
negative comments.
Council approved the motion that
would see the municipality move into
talks with Morris-Turnberry about the
amalgamation of these residents.
Clerk-administrator Jack
McLachlan says that talks will
commence with Morris-Turnberry
soon and there are still many issues to
discuss. McLachlan says it is possible
that Morris-Turnberry may be
looking for some compensation for
the loss in tax revenue the
municipality would be taking by
losing these residents.
