An updated list of sites and events
for Doors Open Haunted Huron was
submitted to Huron East council at
its July 8 meeting.
The list includes nearly 50 sites
spread throughout the county,
including special events taking place
at several sites to emphasize the
theme of Haunted Huron for the
Oct. 17, 18, 19 weekend.
Several events have been designed
to emphasize the scarier corners of
Huron County, including film
screenings and costumed historical
figures.
On the evening of Oct. 17, there
will be a screening of a classic
German silent-era horror movie,
either 1931’s Vampyr or 1921’s The
Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari. There will
also be a screening of a classic
monster movie at the Starlite Drive-
In in Shipka and a theatre event at
the Livery in Goderich.
That night also promises some
outdoor chills with community
ghost walks in Blyth, Wingham and
Seaforth.
Saturday, Oct. 18 boasts a full
slate of events as all sites are open
from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will
be costumed historical figures at 10
sites open that day.
There will be a reading by Ron
Brown, author of Ontario’s Ghost
Town Heritage at the Huron County
Museum in Goderich as well as
guided heritage walks in Brussels,
Clinton and Bayfield and a heritage
marketplace at the CPR Station in
Goderich.
The guide will also feature several
self-guided cemetery tours that can
be done at any time.
Saturday evening will include
dinner and theatre from the Blyth
Festival and a midnight screening of
The Rocky Horror Picture Show at
the Livery in Goderich.
Psychic Phenomenon with Kelly
Ellson will be a major attraction on
Saturday night. Ellson is a psychic
medium and she will discuss how to
tap into the inner-psychic and also
lead tours through local sites and
relay what she is perceiving.
On Saturday night there will be
another reading by Haunted Ontario
author Terry Boyle. There will be a
harvest dinner at the Van Egmond
house, more classic monster movie
screenings in Shipka and
community ghost walks in
Goderich, Exeter and Bayfield.
Sunday will begin with a Dawn Of
The Dead breakfast that will feature
author readings at Bayfield Town
Hall. All sites will be open from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. again and there will
be costumed historical figures at 10
sites.
There will also be a theatrical
heritage tour of the Livery in
Goderich and guided heritage
walking tours in Blyth, Wingham
and Seaforth.
In addition to finalized events,
there are also some events that are
still in development.
One idea that has yet to be
finalized is a screening of a silent
film with a local organist, Ian Sadler
playing while the film is shown. The
film with either be The Phantom Of
The Opera or The Hunchback Of
Notre Dame.
Currently in development is a
Halloween costume workshop
where children could receive help in
making their dream Halloween
costumes.
There is also talk of a possible
haunted house in Howick and a
murder mystery dinner with the
Clinton Community Players.
Sites that will be included in
Doors Open will be the Van Egmond
House, the Brussels Library, the
Seaforth Library, the Logan Mill,
Cardno Hall, Round House and
Seaforth Town Hall in Huron East.
North Huron will open the doors to
the North Huron Museum, the Blyth
Festival backstage, the log cabin at
Threshers Park and the Connell
House.
Morris-Turnberry will have a
straw bale maze and a haunted
house at Bluevale Community Hall.
Bluewater will open its town hall,
St. Joseph Archives and Museum,
Robson Suites and Fowlie Ice
Cream, St. Joseph Historic Park,

Schoolhouse and St. Joseph Church
and Howick will open the doors to
the Gorrie Mill.

A little shade
Proper grooming and heat exhaustion can play a big part in
an outdoor competition, especially while wearing a coat you
can’t take off. Dogs were the stars of the show last week in
Blyth for the 30th annual Bluewater Kennel Club’s All Breed
Dog Shows and Obedience Trials which ran from July 8 to
July 10. Attendance was slightly lower than last year’s
show, but those involved with the event said they expected
a slight decline with gas prices and many participants
coming from the United States. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
