Goderich is something county
council is going to have to consider.
During the report from the Huron
County accessibility advisory
committee to county council July 2,
it was noted that a complaint had
been received regarding the
building. The main entrance has two
steps and the side entrance has a few
barriers to the entrance, even though
it is at ground level.
The complaint claims the front
entrance is not physically accessible
to wheelchairs and walkers and the
main entrance stairs are also a
hazard for the visually impaired.
The barriers at the side, they said
would keep someone with a physical
disability from entering.
Accessibility assistant Jennifer
Cowan is working with the county
facilities manager Sandy McLean to
assess all the Huron facilities. Once
done these will be prioritized.
McLean told the county that
Service Ontario had undertaken a
large interior renovation of the
building some time ago. Barrier-free
access was cut due to budget.
“There is no more money to do
this more suitably. It’s up to us,” said
McLean.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
councillor Ben Van Diepenbeek
asked if it wasn’t mandatory for
council to bring the building to the
proper standards.
“That’s correct,” said McLean.
“The building is accessible. It was
when the standards first came
through. Since then there have been
changes we will need to address.
They aren’t entrenched in the code,
but they will be.”
“It’s not acceptable under current
standards,” added chief
administrative officer Larry Adams.
One of the issues is that the county
property ends at the front door. “We
need Goderich’s approval to make
changes,” said McLean.
With extensions costing in the
neighbourhood of $30,000-$50,000
McLean said he is looking for
direction from council.

Ambulance staff in Brussels will
now be housed at the library office
in Huronlea following the passing of
a recommendation at county council
July 2.
In April, emergency services
manager David Lew contacted
homes administrator Barb Springall
about the use of the facilities by
EMS staff.
Temporary access to the
lunchroom and washroom areas was
given pending modifications for the
staff at Brussels firehall.
The ambulance has parked on the
service end of the evacuation lane at
the rear of the home.
The idea then came as to whether
this could be a permanent
arrangement and in May Springall
and Lew were instructed to bring a
report back to committee of the
whole for consideration.
At the June 17 meeting a
recommendation was made that the
EMS be housed in the library office
and that $500 rent be paid by the
county EMS to the homes
department.
Also included in the
recommendation was that rent that
would have been paid to Huron East
for the fire hall continue until the
end of this year.
At committee the
recommendation got through in a
recorded vote by just one vote.
At the county council meeting,
Morris-Turnberry councillor
Dorothy Kelly said she would rather
have seen the recommendation in
two parts.
“I’m not against the move to
Huronlea, but I’m not in favour of
paying the rent to the end of the
year.”
Chief administrative officer Larry
Adams that only if this motion was
defeated could that option be
considered now.
The recommendation carried.
