The Brussels U-12 soccer players
have been enjoying some soccer
success lately.
They participated in the Lucknow
Strawberry Fest and did extremely
well, coming out in fourth position.
Three of their games were tied at the
end of regulation time, so shootouts
were called.
Scoring throughout the
tournament were Carl Dowe, Laura
Souch, Matt Terpstra, Derrick
Waechter, Tim Waechter, Delayna
Smith, Jayden and Mitch
Kellington. Those making several
attempts were Scott Dolmage,
Stephani Hummel, and Alyssa
Cronin.
Solid on the defence were Luke
McCutcheon, Derrick Waechter,
Kristen Pipe and Logan Kellington.
Solid in net, even under all that
shoot-out pressure, was goalie, Matt
Terpstra.
On Canada Day, Brussels squared
off at home against Lucknow.
Brussels was quick to the net,
scoring five in the first half. Netting
these were Tim Waechter with two,
Dolmage, Dowe and Lexi Smith,
each with one. Assisting them were
Delayna Smith, Kellington and
Dolmage.
In the second half, Coach Cronin
moved the defences to forwards, and
the forwards to defence. This gave
Logan Kellington and Hummel each
the chance to score. Assisting
Kellington was Alyssa Cronin.
Strong in net was Terpstra.
Brussels won 7-2.
Last week’s game in Brussels was
against the Wingham Gift Chest.
Brussels came out strong with Tim
Waechter netting one first, then
Dowe to take a 2-0 lead.
Wingham came back to tie it up,
then take a 3-2 lead.
Mitch Kellington tied that score
up before halftime.
Wingham came ahead in the
second half with two more goals.
Cronin netted one with the
assistance of her brother, Tyler, to
give Brussels four goals of the night.
Brussels lost 5-4.
Playing hard on halfback were
Cody Rathwell, Katie MacFarlane
and Madelaine Rouleau. Dolmage
played well in net.
Next week, Brussels will face
Clinton and Goderich in the year-
end roundrobins.
The Brussels Bantams played
away at Londesborough.
Brussels was on the scoreboard in
the top of the first with a solo
homerun by Andrew Lindsay.
Ty Sebastian, pitching for
Brussels, would have a near perfect
game with 16 strikeouts, one hit
pitch and gave up one solo triple.
Brussels added another in the
second when Zack Watson waited
the walk and was able to steal his
way home.
The Brussels bats exploded in the
third scoring seven runs. Lindsay
added his second homerun for the
game.
Brussels added three more in the
fourth. Sebastian and Jeremy Ross
singled and Watson’s homerun
cleaned the bases.
Brussels, in their final at bat,
scored two more, on a walk to
Lindsay and singles by Sebastian
and Watson.
The final score was Brussels 14,
Londesborough 0.

Eye on the ball
The batter fouls it in her effort at the plate to garner some
runs for her team. This group went down to a resilient
Coultes Crew in a seventh inning walk-off win by a score
of 7-6 during the weekend’s slo-pitch tournament in
Belgrave. The Coultes Crew went into the seventh trailing
6-5, but rallied late to win the Saturday morning game.

U-12 soccer this week was the
battle of Blyth, Lightning against
Thunder. While the Thunder have
enjoyed a good year, the Lightning
have only scored a few wins.
In the first half the Thunder were
on the attack. Evan Kikkert started
in net for the Thunder and Dylan
Walton for the Lightning.
Tyler Boven scored early in the
match from a pass from Alex Peters.
Then Quintin Sjaarda netted one
with some help from Rick Pot, and
put the Thunder ahead by two by the
end of the first half.
Goalies switched to Tyler Boven
and Marion Studhalter for the
second half. The Lightning went to
the attack and came up with a goal.
Megan Hoggart put a pass across to
Dalton Carey who put it away for
the Lightning.
The Lightning pressed the
Thunder into their own end for much
of the second half but were unable to
score again.
The Thunder took the win 2-1.
The Lightning returned to the field
Thursday night to meet Bayfield.
The Lightning were expecting an
easy match. Netminders were
Walton and Ryan Nesbitt who each
took a half.
The Lightning’s Trystan Weber
opened the scoring and kept going.
Melissa Van Schaik, Nesbitt,
Hoggart, and Rob Gordon all scored
one for Blyth. Mackenzie Nesbitt
and Wyatt Carey both scored two
and Weber scored a second time as
well.
Bayfield managed one goal and
the Lightning rolled to an easy
victory.
A meeting of feet
Both Blyth and Brussels had similar thoughts on this ball as
both feet collided with opposite intentions. Brussels took on
one of the two host teams participating in Blyth’s U-8
soccer tournament which featured two Blyth teams, a
Brussels team and a team from Clinton. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Brussels U-12s play well
The Blyth Barons travelled to
Brussels to face the Tigers Sunday,
July 13.
The Barons’ first inning had the
players set down in order.
Trevor Seip was on the hill for the
Barons on the Tiger half of the first.
The Tigers scored one run on no
hits, two walks and a strikeout.
The Barons answered back in the
second with Seip hitting a homerun.
Cole Stewart and Shawn Bromley
each ripped singles. However the
next three went down on strikes to
end the inning.
The Tigers recorded just the one
hit in the bottom half.
The Blyth third saw them score
two runs on a pair of singles by
Mike McDonald and Seip finished
by a triple from Stewart.
The Tigers were set down in order,
on two flyouts and a strikeout.
After a runless top of the inning
the Tigers threatened in the fourth
with a leadoff single. However
the next three batters were called
out.
The Barons added two more in the
fifth inning on singles by Dean
Wheeler, McDonald and Bromley
and a sacrifice fly by Seip.
The Tigers scored no runs in the
fifth.
The Barons brought two more
across in their half of the sixth on
singles by Darcey Cook and Justin
Peters followed by a double by
Wheeler.
The Tigers once again went down
in order in the bottom half.
The Barons failed to add to their
score in the seventh.
Then the Tigers threatened getting
one hit and a couple of players on
base. However they failed to score
any runs and the Barons took home
a resounding 7-1 victory.
