HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-07-17, Page 2Plagued by illness, it’s been a
challenging year for George and Pat
Langlois of Brussels. But with the
support and love of family and
community they gratefully
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary.
The former Pat McPhail was the
daughter of Winnifred and Hugh.
Her groom was the son of Cecil and
Joe. The couple married at Copper
Cliff, Ontario on July 12, 1958.
Attending the bride were her two
sisters, Betty (Glew) and Mary
(Bradshaw). Standing by the groom
were Connie Quenville and Willie
Galipeu.
Following their marriage the
couple resided for a time in
Sudbury. After visiting family in
Brussels, however, they fell in love
with the area and moved there
shortly after.
George opened a hairstyling
salon, which he has operated on
Brussels main street for 40 years.
Pat dedicated herself to raising their
daughter Susan (Meyers). She did,
however, work at a number of jobs,
including photography for The
Brussels Post. She is currently one
of the smiling faces that serves
patrons of Cinnamon Jim’s.
The couple now proudly boast of
their three grandchildren, Curtis,
Maurissa and Brent, and eagerly
follow their interests and hobbies.
The Langloises are well known in
the community through involvement
with a number of groups. George is
a member of the Optimist Club and
has served with the recreation board.
He has played and served on the
executives of ball and hockey
organizations throughout the
years.
He was chosen the Brussels and
Area Citizen of the Year for 1992.
The family enjoyed a quiet
celebration at the Fireside Café.
Special guests were their daughter,
her husband, Bill, their
grandchildren and Pat’s sisters, the
only surviving members of their
bridal party.

The days of summer are moving
fast. For a period in time that is
supposed to be so leisurely, the days
are moving pretty quickly. Once
again we must be having a good time
for the month of July is half spent.
Family gatherings, picnics and
parties are some of the joys of
summer. Travel is predictable,
lifestyle a little more adaptable,
setting negotiable and mood
generally mellow. Dates are set
early, plans are tossed out and a time
of food, fun and frolic is available
for all to enjoy.
If your family hasn’t had their
gathering for the summer, get the
word out about Funfest weekend and
enjoy all the hard work that others
have done just for your enjoyment.
Don and Donna Gibson, Brussels,
formerly of Monkton and Wroxeter,
celebrated their 50th anniversary on
July 11, 2008.
The couple has a daughter, Dana
and husband Dennis Speer of
Kincardine, and a son Duane and
wife Tammy of Brussels. The
Gibsons also have four special
grandchildren, Danielle (Speer) and
husband Dave Lewis, Deborah
Speer, Kyle Gibson and Shane
Gibson.
On July 5, a social gathering and
dinner was held for family and
friends.
Agnes Schell had an Irish
adventure last month. A tour of the
pretty green place with all the
unique things that Ireland has to
offer was a holiday well spent. Son
David and Shannon from England
popped over to meet them for a
weekend to tour and enjoy each
other’s company. David’s job with
RIM (the English chapter) is
winding down and they are looking
forward to the next chapter in their
life with this booming company.
Sheila Richards reports that all is
well in Abbotsford, B.C. She has just
returned from a checkup trip to see
that son Robert, Helen and Lorna are
doing well. Yes they are.
Don’t forget to make Wednesday
part of your downtown time in
Brussels. Sidewalk sales are alwaysfun and to make it even better thereis music at the gazebo. Nothing likea little rhythm to get your mindgoing on the possibilities for themerchandise available, and be sureto check out the musicians – they’renot part of the take-home items I’mtold. As you pass through your livingspace these nice days, take a
moment and pick out a few of your
extra books. The library fund will
grow as you share your old or new
treasures. As part of the Funfest
weekend, the Presbyterian Church is
holding a book sale (with your
donated books) all the proceeds to
pay for our soon coming Library.
Trips around our area once again
remind us of the bounty and
blessings that are part of our daily
life. Enjoy the scenery.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It was a quiet week at the Brussels
Legion Branch and now the busy
time begins. Dinners, weddings and
ball tournament food booth will fill
the next two weeks. Comrades can
sign up at the Branch to help out at
the food booth.
The windows were cleaned this
week, in and out, by me and my
great helper, Marlene Dale. We also
managed to houseclean some
kitchen cupboards to get ready for
the upcoming functions at the
Branch.
The final Friday night supper of
the summer was held with only a
small crowd out to enjoy the lasagna
and Caesar salad. The cook is taking
a break for the next few weeks and
we hope to see everyone back in
September. The Branch appreciates
the support of all who attend our
suppers and will miss seeing our
many new friends.
Tickets for the Saturday night
dance for Funfest are available at
the Branch or at George of Brussels.
The John Heaman band is a great
dance band and we think people will
enjoy the music.
Elimination draw tickets are now
at the branch. Comrades can come
and pick up a book to sell. If you get
your tickets early, your name will be
in for the early bird draw.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had over eight tables of players
looking to be winners. The first-
place team was Willis and Betty
with 76 points. The second-place
team was Bev Hayden and Mary
McIntosh with 73 points. There was
a tie for third place with Lloyd and
Lillian Appleby and Joyce Hodgins
and Norma Strong each getting 72
points.
The cards were not kind to
Carman and Ila Pollock who won
only 36 points for the low prize.
Lone hand prizes went to Fay
Alberts and Jim Coultes.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd dancing to the music of
the Country Versatiles. When over
100 bodies keep the dance floor full
all night, it makes for a hot time at
the Branch.

Morris-Turnberry councillors fine-
tuned the wording of a housekeeping
amendment to the municipality’s
official plan at their July 8 meeting.
Councillors made the wording
change in an amendment that will
allow a second residential unit to be
attached to the main residence on a
farm.
The amendment had been
discussed at an earlier meeting of
council but deputy-mayor Jim
Nelemans was having second
thoughts. He discussed some of the
homes in Turnberry that had already
been constructed and was unhappy
with the appearance. “It’s just as
though someone put a new house
smack-dab in front of another
house,” he complained.
The bylaw calls for a minimum of
25 per cent shared wall and requires
the two units to appear like one
house but Nelemans said this would
