However, they have also asked for a review of whether or not they have been approaching it the best way. When the homes were built in the early 1990s, the shingles for Huronlea had a warranty of 15 years, while Huronview’s were warrantied for 25 years. In her report to council homes administrator Barb Springall noted that the vendor, is now, unfortunately, no longer in business. She recommended proceeding with the quote from Morgan Roofing, which was the lowest of three and met all requirements. The contractor has also done roofing repairs at both homes. The quote for Huronlea, in the amount of $25,200 is slightly above the $20,000 included in the budget. Huronview quote of $24,341, is only slightly higher than the budgetted amount of $25,000. Both have a 40-year warranty Huron East councillor Bernie MacLellan, noted that this wasn’t the first time roof repairs had been done on the buildings. He also asked if it might not be better to consider a product that will last even longer. Springall said that roofing was on- going as every year quotes were brought in for small “manageable” work to be done. “There’s not a lot of local agencies interested in doing a large area. That’s one of the reasons we haven’t gone with a huge quote.” No areas have been repeated from the original build, she said. As for changing products, Springall said that she would want to do some research with the environmental services manager. Matching would be another issue so that the roof would be seamless. MacLellan said that when you buy a 25-year single “you’re lucky if you get 15. I see nothing wrong with what we’re doing, but the metal clad shingles say 50 years’ warranty and you’ll get 50 years.” Huron East councillor Bill Siemon agreed that a review should be done. “I’ve had 20-year and 30-year shingles. And there was only one year’s difference between them.” With the steel, they would get three times the use, he said, adding that it also made envionrmental sense as the steel can be recycled. Prior to voting on MacLellan’s motion that alternative roofing be investigated, Bluewater’s Bill Dowson said, “It’s only good business to look into it.” The motion carried.
