HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-07-10, Page 23By Reba JeffersonMeeting three of the Wawanosh 4-H Powerful Producers was held onJuly 4 at the Jeffersons. While members were arriving theyvisited the Jefferson’s garden withtheir task being to name anddescribe a vegetable that was growing in the garden. Members answered with all different types of produce such as strawberries, peas, beans, corn, onions and more. Vice-president, Sydney McIlhargey opened the meeting with the pledge. Emma Enders read the minutes for the last meeting. The club voted on the title page forthe books. Jolande Oudshoorn’s titlepage was the most popular. Mary Ellen informed the club thatshe had received $60 from theIvomec/Eprinex 4-H BoxbackProgram. Members are to ask family, friends and neighbours for boxes as a fundraiser will continue this year. The leaders checked all the members’ books to see if they were up to date. Some needed to do some work on their books while others started to bake and cook. Baked apples with maple sauce, strawberry shortcake, applesauce, and quick tomato sauce. While the food was baking juniorleader, Ellen Jefferson, led a WhoWants to Be a Millionaire game withall questions related to Ontario freshfruit and vegetables. Memberslearned a lot. For example, tomatoesand melons are best selected when they are heavy for their size, and if potatoes get too much light they turn green and sprout. Next members tried the two different kinds of applesauce, one made with McIntosh apples and the other made with empire apples. Members found that the McIntosh applesauce is sweeter. The members tasted all the bakedgoods including fresh fruit crispmade with apples and elderberrieswhich was made prior to the meetingby junior leaders Ellen and RebaJefferson. The next meeting will be held at the Lucknow Horticultural Society’s Flower Show on July 9 at the Lucknow Town Hall. Members are reminded to have their entries for the show into Lucknow on the Tuesday evening or brought to the Jefferson house by 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. President Melissa Higgins endedthe meeting with the motto.THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2008. PAGE 23. There’s still time to enter Town and Country’s golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Woodlands Links, Clinton starting at 10 a.m. The tournament includes 18 holes of golf, a full steak dinner, and excellent prizes for everyone. “Businesses and individuals have been generous in supporting this event. We have great prizes to give away,” said Shelley McPhee Haist of Town and Country Support Services. Along with prizes for the best golfers of the day, there will be prizes for longest drive, closest to the hole for both men and women, and even a prize for the highest score of the day. As well there will be a putting contest. McPhee Haist said, “This tournament is a major fundraiser for Town and Country and all proceeds go directly back to help senior citizens, frail elderly, disabled adults and children with services to help them live independently.” Town and Country assisted more than 4,000 people in Huron and Perth Counties last year with programs like – Meals on Wheels, Transportation Services, Home Help, Friendly Visiting, Dining for Seniors and Seniors’ Exercise Classes. Last year the agency delivered more than 21,000 hot and frozen meals in Huron County and offered more than 11,000 trips with mobility van and volunteer driver services. Golfers are asked to register by Aug. 1. The cost is $70. To register call Town and Country Support Services at 519-482-9264. Early bird registration runs until July 18 for $60 each. Located just west of Clinton on Hwy. 8, Woodlands Links is a Scenic Audubon Golf Course, known for its wildlife conservation, rock gardens and walking trails.
