I always felt
that this rite of
passage would
make me an adult.
Now that we have
all reached this
day, I do not feel
any different –
maybe wiser but
the changes we
have undergone are up to the people
who have seen us grow.
Whenever we would whine,
complain or just get mad and
frustrated when we didn’t get our
way, I can remember Mr. Bartlett
saying that life is not fair and we
needed to start getting used to it.
Well Mr. Bartlett, I think that this
year, we have really learned that is no
doubt the dead truth.
Teachers! We remember entering
the Grade 8 room at break time,
saying, “You have the RIGHT to
remain SILENT! ANYTHING you
say or do will be misquoted, then
used against you.”
But don’t get me wrong. I know we
haven’t always been the easiest
people to be around, but these people
have always been around for us. We
can only offer all the gratitude in the
world to our teachers.
The first time most of us came to
this school was about 10 years ago in
kindergarten. I remember we had one
of the nicest teachers in the world,
Mrs. Whitmore.
When I was in kindergarten I
couldn’t wait to grow up, but now
that I am much older I miss the good
old days, especially nap time. Nap
time was one of the best times in
kindergarten. I remember nobody
would actually sleep half the time but
instead we would just lie on our
blankets, stare at each other and
giggle for no apparent reason.
Our Grade 2 teacher was Mr. Park.
He was always a lot of fun to be
around. I remember we had a huge
aquarium filled with snails and we
would always feed them banana
peels, apple cores, and your basic
compost.
Grade 4 was definitely one of the
most confusing, messed up years in
our time at Grey Central. We had four
different teachers that year and that’s
not including our wonderful French
teacher, Madame C.
We started off with our class split
up – some of us had Mrs. Murray, and
some of us had Mrs. Mitchell and Mr.
Harrison. They both could only
survive half the day with us before
they had to switch and take some
time to recover from us.
Our class was reunited in Mrs.
Mitchell’s and Mr. Harrison’s class.
Then we drove Mr. Harrison crazy so
he left and we got Mrs. Burnfield.
Grade 5 brought us one of the
people who has greatly affected us
during our time at Grey Central. So
did Grade 6 and 7 AND 8 – Mr.
Barlett. He made us do things we
thought would never do us any good,
but now looking back, those things
have made a real difference in our
lives and will help steer us towards
greater things than we could have
ever imagined.
Just for the record Mr. Bartlett, we
do appreciate all the things you have
done for us, even when you do
annoyingly repeat everything we say.
We giggle while thinking about the
kids at your new school and how they
have no idea what’s in store for them
in September. We hope you will have
a great time teaching there and
messing with their heads.
This past year has also brought us
another great person – Mr. Hernden.
Mr. Hernden has got to be one of
the coolest, most technologically
smart people I know. He would
always talk to us like we were real
adults and he would face situations
very calm and reasonably. He just
understands what it’s like to be our
age and go through the stuff that we
have had to face. He showed us he
genuinely cared by not assigning
loads and loads of homework or
totally yelling and getting mad at us
when we messed up.
We have so many new memories
from the totally awesome Celtic trip.
I just would like to thank anyone and
everyone who did anything at all to
help make our trip a totally incredible
one.
We have learned many things here
at Grey but there are some that stand
out from all the rest. Here are some of
the most important things we have
learned in our past years here at Grey:
1. Treat each day as it is your last,
one day you will be right.
2. If you can’t convince them,
confuse them.
3. Follow your dreams … except for
the ones that could make you end up
in jail.
4. Super glue is forever.
5. It takes two to lie: one to tell the
lie and one to listen to it.
6. A kindergartner voice is louder
than 200 adults in a crowded
gymnasium.
7. If you think nobody cares, try
coming to class unprepared.
8. The sooner you fall behind, the
more time you’ll have to catch up.
9. Experience is something you
never get until just after you really
needed it.
10. A conclusion is a place where
you got tired of thinking.
11. People can come up with
statistics to prove anything, 14 per
cent of people know that.
12. A six year old can start a fire
