On July 2 the Blyth Destroyers U-
16 soccer squad travelled to
Goderich to play the Goderich Reds
for the second week in a row.
Last time Blyth played
shorthanded and lost the soccer
game. This time they had a full
squad, with a couple of subs and
Blyth played an excellent game of
soccer.
Kurtis Kolkman did a great job
covering the net for his team during
the first half of the game, letting
only one ball get past him on a
corner kick.
It wasn’t long before Blyth had an
opportunity to tie up the game, when
a penalty was awarded to Goderich
for a shove from behind. Tolson
Carter took the penalty shot and
scored to tie the game. Leendert
VanDorp shot the ball towards the
net and Carter walked the ball a little
closer to the net and chipped the ball
into the net to gain the lead for
Blyth.
Goderich scored at the top of the
first half on a breakaway, against
keeper Greg Roetcisoender. Blyth
worked hard to break the tie. Carter
shot the ball towards the net and
Brent Drost was able to chip the ball
into the net. This goal gave Blyth the
confidence they needed and they
made some great passes and took
several nice shots on the Goderich
net. Drost assisted the next goal for
Blyth crossing the ball over the field
for Jessie Pot who took control. He
got a great shot on net to score.
Brendan Boven booted the ball up
the field and Drost scored another
goal for Blyth. Blyth won this match
by 5-2.
Defensive players Boven, Carter,
Kolkman, Alec Lorentz, Jacob and
Micah Nonkes, Jordan Rinn and
Matt Steele did an outstanding job at
keeping the ball out of their end and
kept digging hard to obtain ball
control, giving their opponents few
opportunities to score, said coaches.
The Destroyers worked hard
together as a team and their efforts
paid off earning a win to this soccer
game.
The Destroyers have one more
game in Goderich before playoff
week July 14-18.
Brussels U-10s played on July 2 in
Wingham.
Brussels started the game with

The Blyth Warheads U-14 soccer
team travelled to Brussels to play
July 3. Blyth has a large team with
20 players this year, but for this
game only 15 players were able to
attend, so the players were happy to
have lots of playing time on the
field.
The VanDorp twins teamed up to
score the first goal of the night with
Jan Paul earning the assist and
Leendert the goal. Jan Paul VanDorp
was able to gain control of the ball
and scored another goal with an
assist from Tyler Guetter. Defender
Micah Nonkes was able to boot the
ball up the field and Greg
Roetcisoender settled the ball down
and scored a goal for Blyth on a long
shot. Guetter earned the assist on the
next goal as Roetcisoender shot the
ball into the net for the Warheads.
Blyth was able to add to the
scoreboard when Derek deBoer
snuck the ball past the keeper to tip
it in for a goal, on an assist from Joel
Pizzati earned another assist when
JanPaul VanDorp headed the ball
into his opponent’s net. Defender
Murray Dale worked the ball up the
field and JanPaul scored to earn his
third goal or a hattrick for the night.
Wyatt Bearss did a great job
covering the net for the Warheads
and almost earned a shutout. In the
last seconds of the game, however,
Brussels scored to bring the final
score to a 7-1 win for Blyth.
The coaches noted that Blyth
made some nice passes and
communicated well to earn this win.
The defensive line-up of Dale,
Lucas Frawley, Nonkes and Josh
Raynard did a great job of clearing
the ball out of their zone during the
game and gets credited with
recognition for helping their team
earn the win.
