The Citizen, 2008-07-10, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2008.
Did you sing O’ Canada at least
once last week?
We are a fortunate lot to have been
given residency in Canada. On July
1, I watched the televised ceremony
from the CN tower that welcomed
nearly 50 people from 20 countries
as our newest Canadians. As the
ceremony proceeded the looks of
pride and humble words made me
realize how we forget our blessings
and take healthcare, peace, voting
and education for granted.
Young girls and old men spoke of
the reasons they chose to come to
Canada, each one with their own
story but ready to be Canadian.
The judge was a wise one and told
them that their job now is to support
community, volunteer in their
neighbourhood and vote. All things,
if each of us would do regularly –
Canada could remain a very good
place to live.
If music feeds the soul we are in
for a banquet this summer. Goderich
Lions Harbour Park has a series of
Sunday evening concerts that feature
bands from Ayr, Stratford, Galt and
around. Dixie, country, concert and
swing are on the schedule and
several Brussels folks were seen
enjoying the Kincardine CommunityBand this past Sunday.Seaforth community is alsooffering music on Thursdayevenings in Victoria Park. One stopgets you oldies early then moves intothe blues – so check it out. You’llfeel better.Darby Alcorn is seeing the sightsof Japan thanks to Lions
International, the Brussels Lions
Club and her hard work. An e-mail
from Osaka let Momma Mary Ann
know she is doing fine. Three weeks
with host families and a week in
camp will send all her time in Japan.
Way to go Darby.
Emily Cardiff and Lauren Hoegy
have seen the sights of Paris. Plans
have been in the works for a while
for a backpacking trip through
Europe. As a diversion for these two
young women as they work hard at
university, dreams became concrete
plans. After three days in Paris with
sights and plans galore the fun
begins. Last heard our friends were
heading for the Alps and onward for
adventure for the month of July.
Andrew Watson is in Korea,
travelling with the Choi family of
Wingham as they check out family
all over Korea. His greetings and
important words spoken in Korean
sounded pretty impressive.
So good for these young people
for grabbing the opportunities that
life offers. Each one, Darby, Emily,
Lauren and Andrew are fine
examples of the good kids we grow
in Huron County. Better
ambassadors to the world we
couldn’t find.
Check that Funfest schedule very
carefully. You need to plan your timefor July 25, 26 and 27 to take in asmuch as your body will allow. Enjoythe fine weather.Bye now, Betty G.W.

The tradition of going to Lucknow
Legion on July 1 to do a fish fry
continued with seven Brussels
Legion Comrades heading off. They
cooked for nearly 250 on the
beautiful summer’s day. Helping out
were Comrades Greg Wilson, Sharon
Montgomery, Rick and Jo-Ann
McDonald, Jason and LeeAnn
Konarski and Judy Lee.
Congratulations to the students
from Brussels Public School Grade 8
graduation class. I understand it was
a great evening for everyone.
Congratulations to Sara Gerber and
Dalton Hamilton on receiving the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 218
Proficiency Awards presented by
Comrade Eric Ross.
The Friday night supper of cold
plate was enjoyed by a good crowd.
This week will be lasagna and salad.
This will be the last supper of the
summer.
Comrades Eric Ross and Bob
Richardson played in District golf in
Fergus on the weekend and will not
be advancing to the next level of
play.
It’s time for a little sprucing up
around the Branch. This week the
eavestroughs were repaired and
cleaned out. Windows are the next
thing on the agenda and with some
help from some high school students
needing community hours, we hope
that happens this week.
The elimination draw tickets are
now available at the Branch, so get
yours early to get in on the Early
Bird draws. Comrades can drop in
and pick up a book of tickets to sell.
The dance for Funfest features a
very popular dance band, the John
Heaman Band. They feature music
that includes waltzes, two step and
polkas, music to hold your partner
with. Tickets are available at the
Branch.
