Huron County beaches unsafeWith above average rainfallrecently, the Huron County HealthUnit is reminding people of the risksof swimming in beach water afterheavy rains.Public health manager PamelaScharfe said beach water samplescan show high levels of E.coli after aheavy rainfall which indicates thatthere is fecal contamination present from either animal or human or both. There could also be harmfulbacteria, parasites and/or virusespresent in the water. Scharfe says, “Swimming atHuron County beaches is safe mostof the time, but heavy rain flushes the land and ends up in the lake.” “Rain water runs across driveways, lawns, parking lots and roads and picks up bird droppings, fertilizer, oil, and pet waste. In the rural areas the water runs across farm fields picking up manure and sewage from malfunctioning septic systems. It all ends up in the water courses that lead to the lake.” People exposed to pollution in lake water may experience ear, nose, throat, and/or stomach upset. They should see a physician and report that they were swimming prior to becoming ill. The health unit has volunteer rainfall monitors at all public swimming locations who report heavy rainfall events as they happen. Residents can call the Health Unit Beach Water Infoline at 519-482- 3416 ext. 2501 to find out which beaches have had heavy rainfall. The Health Unit recommends not swimming at those beaches for two days after heavy rains. General information on the Health Unit’s beach water sampling program is also available on the County’s website www.huroncounty.ca. Scharfe says, “Based on several years of beach water sample data we know that when swimmers can see their feet at waist depth of an adult it is a safe day for swimming at Huron County beaches.” Taking the plunge Jacob Holthuysen went off the deep end last week at a School’s Out pool party in Brussels hosted by the recreation department.
