Well done
On June 23, Brussels Public School’s mixed soccer team

banner the school has won in recent memory. Coaches
were Mrs. Rodgers and Miss Bennett. Assistant coaches
were Rachel Oldridge and Dalton Hamitlon. Team members
were Jamee Johnston, Wyatt Ducharme, Colton Hastings,
Jessica Miners, Jenna Smith, Kristen Pipe, Mackenzie
McGavin, Brody TenPas, Brianne Oldridge, Scott Dolmage,

Jamieson Johnston. (Photo submitted)
Success
Brussels Public School had plenty of representation at the regional track and field meet in
Stratford last week. Nine students made their way east for the competition bringing plenty of
success back with them. Back left: Kristen Pipe, Laura Souch, Adam Cousins, Trevor Nesbitt
and Wyatt Ducharme. Front left: Brianne Oldridge, Lauren McNichol, Brody Tenpas and Jacob
Holthysen. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Brussels PS athletes winfirsts at Regional meet
Cold, wet weather didn’t deter
nine Brussels Public School students
from competing in the regional track
and field meet in Stratford. It turned
out to be a very successful day.
Two weeks earlier Laura Souch,
Wyatt Ducharme, Jacob Holthysen,
Kristen Pipe, Brianne Oldridge,
Brody TenPas, Adam Cousins,
Lauren McNichol and Trevor
Nesbitt qualified for Regionals by
finishing first or second at the
District meet at F.E. Madill in
Wingham.
Souch showed great speed in the
PeeWee girls 100m and 200m
running races. She placed first in
both events and was the District’s
top PeeWee female.
Ducharme was the first to cross
the line in the 200m and 800m for
the PeeWee boys. He also had the
largest stretch in long-jump bringing
home first there as well. Ducharme
was later awarded District Top
PeeWee male award.
Holthysen was the PeeWee boy
high jump success story. He jumped
well to bring home a second.
Pipe and Oldridge also won gold.
Pipe ran in the 100m and Oldridge
competed in the long jump. TenPas
brought home a first in the junior
boys long jump.
Cousins was at District for
Intermediate boys high jump and he
too, won gold.
McNichol was first in both the
junior girls 100m and long jump.
Nesbitt placed first in the Senior
boys 200m running event.
An honourable mention went to
both the PeeWee boys and Junior
girls relay teams. Hayden TenPas,
Mitchell Kellington, Scott Dolmage
and Ducharme ran the race of their
lives and took home gold determined
by a photo finish. Raven Kenny,
Mackenzie McGavin, Pipe and
Oldridge beat all other competitors
for first place.
Unfortunately neither teams were
able to continue on to Regionals
because these events were not
offered there.
The District competition had more
BPS athletes than previous years.
There were many third and fourth
placements.
At Regionals, with the weather so
miserable and the tough competition
of top athletes from 53 schools
within Huron and Perth Counties,
there was abound to be successes
and disappointments. The nine from
Brussels competed in 13 events and
took home seven placement ribbons.
The results were: Souch, first,
100m; Ducharme, first, 200m and
800m, fourth, long jump; Pipe,
fourth, 100m; Cousins, second, high
jump; and McNichol, fourth, 100m.
Honourable mention to Brussels
sister school Grey Central. Binding
friendships between schools had
kids from both sides encouraged and
supported their friends in fun and
friendly competition.
A kick
It was super soccer action as the Brussels U-14 girls squad
put on a display of steely determination when they hosted
