The Blyth U-16 Destroyers soccer
team travelled to Goderich to play
their weekly game of soccer on June
25. With a communication
breakdown, only nine players
showed up to play soccer forcing
Blyth to play shorthanded.
Goderich scored four goals during
the first half of the game. Blyth got
on the scoreboard midway through
the half when they stole the ball
away from their opponents. Tolson
Carter scored for Blyth with an
assist from Brent Drost.
Goderich went on to score four
more goals on keeper Ross
MacDonald before the final whistle
blew.
In the second half Blyth
dominated the shots on net, but just
couldn’t get the ball into the mesh.
Blyth’s coach Rob Kolkman said,,
“We just can’t buy a goal in this
game, we’ve had so many chances!”
With two players short of a full
squad, Blyth couldn’t complain
about getting enough playing time.
You could see that the players grew
tired as the night wore on.
Goderich won 8-1.The Brussels Bantams played
home to Ripley on Wednesday, June
25.
Brendan Stretton started on the
mound for Brussels. Ripley scored
six runs on four walks, one single,
two doubles and two strikeouts.
Andrew Lindsay for Brussels
singled in Brussels’ first only to be
left stranded.
Ripley was held to a single run
in each of the second and third
innings with Stretton adding three
strikeouts.
In the bottom of the third Brussels
finally got on the scoreboard getting
five runs on seven walks, one hit
pitch and a single.
Ripley extended their lead adding
another three runs with one double,
three singles and a walk.
Adam Cousins took over pitching
duties for Brussels to close the
inning with two fielded outs.
In the final inning Stretton kept
hopes alive with a stand-up triple.
Rachel Cousins and Jeremy Ross
loaded the bases with walks. Hope
was lost with two strikeouts at the
plate.
The final score was Ripley 13,
Brussels 5.
The next home game is July 14 at
8:30 p.m. against Seaforth.
The U-12 Blyth Lightning soccer
team had a match against Brussels
last week.
It was a fastpaced game with the
Lightning striking first. Megan
Hoggart worked the ball up to
Trystan Weber who scored for Blyth.
Matt Terpstra tied the game
scoring for Brussels.
Blyth went ahead when Dalton
Carey scored on a penatly shot. The
Lightning jumped ahead when Ryan
Nesbitt and Weber scored with
Wyatt Carey assisting both goals.
Brussels finished off the scoring
in the first half when Patrick
Franken scored.
Brussels scored first in the second
half with forward Tim Waechter
netting one to cut the Blyth lead to
one.
But the Lightning increased their
lead when Marlayna Kolkman
scored, Hoggart and Melissa Van
Schaik assisting. And Nesbitt scored
when another penalty shot was
awarded to Blyth.
Brussels finished off the scoring
with Alissa Cronin getting one past
the Blyth net minder. Blyth took the
game 6 - 4.
The annual Lucknow soccer
tournament was held this weekend
with the Lightning participating.
In their first match Blyth faced
Mildmay United. Though it was a
hard-fought game on the field Blyth
walked away with the game on the
scoreboard. The Lightning scored
six goals to Mildmay's one. Goal
scorers were Nesbitt and Wyatt
Carey who both scored twice, Alex
Peters and Mackenzie Nesbitt each
netted one. Assists went to Hoggart,
Nesbitt, Carey and Peters.
The second game was an early-
morning match in the rain against
Clinton Chelsea.
Clinton struck first to go ahead
early in the match.
It wasn't until midway through the
second half the Lightning's Dalton
Carey tied the game with Leanne
Plunkett earning an assist.
The game ended in a tie so it went
to a shoot out. Five shooters from
each team most goals wins. Ryan
Nesbitt, Peters, and Schramm scored
for the Lightning.
Evan Kikkert came up with some
big saves in the Blyth net to give
Blyth the win.
The Lightning faced Goderich
Legion in the final game. The hard-
hitting Goderich team took an early
lead.
Blyth was able to even things up
when Ryan Nesbitt scored on a pass
from Dalton Carey.
Goderich opened up a lead with a
couple of high lob shoots into the
Blyth net. Goderich netted one more
to take a commanding lead.
The Blyth team took some injuries
and struggled to get out of their own
end. Late in the second half the
Lightning pushed Goderich back
and took control of the game.
Plunkett scored the final goal
for Blyth with Robert Gordon
assisting.
Blyth lost 4- 2 and with only five
points from regular play was
eliminated from the playoffs.
Catch and release
It was baseball fun as it’s meant to be when the Blyth Pre-
Mite squad hosted their Ethel counterparts in action June
25. The visiting catcher moves quickly to try and get the
out. (Vicky Bremner photo)

BRUSSELS MINOR HOCKEY
U-12 Lightning downs Brussels
The Blyth U-14 Warheads soccer
team travelled to Goderich to play
against Goderich Red at the YMCA
field on June 26. This was an
extremely closely-matched game of
soccer as both teams volleyed the
ball up and down the field, working
to gain control of the ball. There
were many shots taken on both nets,
but neither team was able to score in
the first half of the game.
Blyth poured on the power and
scored near the midway point of the
second half. The VanDorp twins
teamed up and Jan Paul earned the
assist on his brother Leendert’s goal.
This gave Blyth the momentum they
needed to score again. Keeper Micah
Nonkes earned an assist after
kicking the ball to the middle of the
field. Greg Roetcisoender took
control and scored on a breakaway.
Wyatt Bearss and Nonkes took
turns in the net for the Warheads and
both made some great saves to earn
a shutout for their team. Blyth won
2-0.
Coaches Mary Ann and Brent
Drost were pleased with their team’s
effort and determination to keep
digging for control of the ball and
taking shots on their opponent’s
net.
