The Citizen, 2008-07-03, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2008. PAGE 3. North Huron council has supported a resolution that will see the valour of firefighters recognized. Councillor Greg McClinchey presented the resolution at the regular council meeting of June 23. He spoke of the national memorial honouring the contributions of fallen peace officers. The names of four officers killed while on duty were added to this in 2007, including OPP Const. David Mounsey of Blyth and York Regional Detective Const. Robert Plunkett, who was raised in Auburn. “Fifty per cent of the names added were directly connected to North Huron,” said McClinchey. Firefighting too, can be a dangerous occupation, he said. In 2007 16 Canadian firefighters perished while on the job. “The fear is that here are 16 people, but there will be no place where they can be registered.” The resolution, he said, is an effort to get politicians and peripheral groups to consider the memorial. “I’m asking council to support a motion saying we feel there should be a permanent national memorial to honour fallen firefighters.” “Firefighters present an essential service to each and every community and are routinely required to place themselves in situations that are inherently dangerous,” said McClinchey. Reeve Neil Vincent felt it was important to find a way to determine a definition for those who “die in the line of duty.” “Many may be injured, but live out a year or longer. I woud like to see that they recognize those people whose injury ended their life.” McClinchey said that the motion is conceptual, but that there has been debate as to what line of duty death means. “If the injury can be linked to the death then it’s considered line of duty.” Happy birthday to Stephen Thompson who celebrates July 3. Happy anniversary to Tony and Nellie Van Bakel who celebrate on July 4. Happy birthday to Brenda Brooks who celebrates on July 7. Come out and see what they have to offer and buy fresh and local. On Wednesday, June 25, 20 Blyth Seniors held their regular meeting at the Parish Hall of Trinity Anglican Church. They enjoyed a great variety of food at the potluck dinner. Plans were made for the club’s entertainment afternoon at Huronlea on July 15 at 2 p.m. Sept. 22 is the annual bus trip. This year it is to the Geritol Follies in Hamilton. Anyone wanting tickets may contact Jean Nethery. The club is planning to have John Hardy from Hanover as the guest speaker on Oct. 22. He has written two books on railways and will illustrate his talk with slides of pictures of trains that passed through this area. The club was entertained at a musical concert by three gifted young people from the Nicholson family. Robyn played piano and guitar, Emily played the violin and Lucas played the guitar. It was a great way to close the meeting. There will be no meetings until September. All local seniors are welcome to attend. New addition Ernest Dow, right, helped to welcome the Blyth Youth Park’s newest addition with the help of Blyth Building Supplies last week. The new pyramid ramp is now set and ready for use. The ramp, as well as the next addition expected in the fall, was constructed by students from St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton.
