HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-06-26, Page 12Jim and Pat Barnes welcomed thecongregation of campers to serviceson Sunday morning at Knox UnitedChurch, Belgrave. The front of thechurch was set up as a camp, with alarge tent, evergreen trees, campfireand flag pole.Melissa Snyders welcomed
everyone, especially Mrs. Margaret
McGill of Australia. Mrs. McGill is
visiting with Steve and Nicole,
Kathryn and Victoria Coultes.
Melissa started the service by
entering the tent, and waking up to
the sound of the rooster crowing. As
she left the tent, she rang a bell to
wake up the campers, who all ran in
from the back of the church to join
her at the front.
Adel Dodds gave the story for
morning watch, during which she
compared the children and the
congregation to a box of crayons,
noting that each one is different.
Each child was given a box of
crayons to remind them when they
colour they can colour a picture of
beauty.
The opening camp song was Rise
and Shine with Elizabeth Procter atthe piano and Lila Procter andNicole Coultes with their guitars.Following the responsive call toworship, Mrs. Snyders reflected onthe experiences campers have. Someof the things she enjoyed were thesinging, the campfires, meeting new
friends, staying up late and
swimming.
Everyone joined in singing, He’s
Got the Whole World after which the
senior choir sang Jesus is Lord of
All.
Melissa read Luke 18, and another
camp song, I’ve Got Peace Like a
River was sung.
Her story to the children was
entitled, Heaven’s Art Gallery and it
was about all the pictures a person
saw in heaven and the story related
to everyone in various stages of their
faith journey.
She gave each child a paintbrush
so they could paint their version of
beauty, then the children all went
outside with their teachers to play
camp games.
The congregation sang Pass It On.
To open her campfire messageMelissa had everyone make thesounds of a rainstorm, and then toldanother camp story. Seeds of faithare planted at camps like CampMenesetung and Camp Bimini, andthe stories and friends that you makethere, you remember for a lifetime.
She noted that there are various
other kinds of camps, but she hoped
that the seeds that are planted at
church camps, will grow and
encourage children to explore their
faith.
There was a special offering
gathered in pails, collected by
Sydney Wightman, Chris and
Lindsay Shiell and Jenna Hopper.
The regular offering was received by
Joyce Vincent and Megan Carter. It
was dedicated by singing Johnny
Appleseed.
Mrs. Snyders told the story of a
seven-year-old’s first time at camp,
and how the counsellor he had had
tucked him in. It made that child’s
camp experience one for him to
remember as he was tucked in every
night. At the end of camp, he
expressed his desire to be acounsellor too.Melissa thanked everyone for allthe work they had done to set up andhelp with the service. Next Thursday there will be a freeswim starting at 3 p.m. at CampMenesetung which will be followed
by a spaghetti supper. All are
welcome to come and experience
camp life.
The official board will also meet
next Thursday at 8 p.m. in the
church.
Next Sunday will be a Canada Day
Service at 11 a.m. with Bruce
Whitmore taking the service.
