During the local fire departments’ breakfasts, youngsters
are attracted as much to the large, shiny red firetrucks as
they are to the delicious food. Sisters, Rose, two, and
Grace, six, Van Nes were in the driver’s seat. (Vicky Bremner

It was a cold and wet week for the
kids to finish school. Playdays,
camping, track, class trips, two pitch
and picnics are just some of the
things the kids have been doing.
High school kids have been
writing exams and they will be glad
to be done. Thursday will be the last
day of school for elementary kids,
so everyone needs to watch for
children out playing if the weather
ever gets better.
It is also graduation time of year
for the college and university
students. Fred and Heidi McClure
were busy this week with two of
their children’s graduation
exercises.
Son Darrell graduated with his
Bachelor of Commerce in
Management of Economic Industry
and Finance from the University of
Guelph. Darrell has accepted a
position at the Royal Bank in
Guelph. On Wednesday Jennifer
graduated as a Physical Therapist
Assistant from Conestoga College.
Jennifer has accepted a position in
the Renfrew area.
Congratulations to both.
Mary Huether was also off to hergrandson’s graduation. Marytravelled to Markham to Gary andJoan Ritchie’s, then joined them forthe trip to Ottawa and CarltonUniversity. Christopher Ritchiegraduated with a degree in history.Congratulations to him. Some area young men were off ona fishing trip last weekend. Chrisand Devin Blake, Barry Young andSteve Carnochan were off to Lost
Channel. They were even lucky
enough to catch fish. They caught
bass and pickerel.
If Lost Channel sounds familiar to
some of you Walton folks, it’s
because that’s the area where a
bunch of Walton men had their hunt
camp and cabin years ago. They
were Dick Marks, Watty Reid,
George Taylor, Stewart Humphries,
Ken McDonald, George Carter and
Ron Bennett. They used to go
hunting and fishing and it was
always quite an experience.
As time passed, many of the men
would take their sons, so another
generation had the experience of the
rugged outback of the area. They
fished on the Pickerel River and the
Kawigamog Lake.
I can remember a time when the
men went up to put a deck on the
cabin and came home with many a
black-fly bite.
The cabin has passed through the
hands of some descendants of the
original men and now is owned by a
fellow from Seaforth.
Another senseless act of
vandalism occurred last weekend.
Someone stole a truck belonging toAndrew McDonald and drove it toSeaforth where they destroyed thevehicle by fire. If anyone hasinformation on this crime, pleasecontact Crime Stoppers. There were quite a few menaround for the sale of Gord Pryce’son Thursday morning. It was a goodsale with mostly equipment on offerand even the rain held off for theday.
Congratulations to Kelly and Kelli
Workman on the birth of a daughter,
Georgia. Grandparents are Brian
and Joanne Workman and Elaine
Workman.
Returning from a trip to
Vancouver are Pauline Gulutzen and
sister, Shirley Hertlien. They were
there to visit Pauline’s nephews,
Fred and Jason. The women did a lot
of walking and went to Stanley Park,
a Chinese garden and saw the city
from the tower. They also checked
out Grandview Island and went to
Kelowna for two days to visit Jason
at his home.
Our wishes for a speedy recovery
go out to Mary Huether as she has
suffered a broken hip. She is
currently a patient in Stratford
hospital.
