(Vicky Bremner photo) June 19, Blyth’s Barons travelledto Atwood for men’s fastball action. In the first inning, after two quickouts, Mike McDonald ripped adouble, but was left stranded afterTrevor Seip struck out. In their half Atwood took a 1-0 lead. The Barons came out swinging in the secon inning. Chris Stewart and Mike Bromley reached base on errors by the Atwood infield. Justin Peters singled to pick up the RBI. Shawn Bromley got on on a fielder’s choice. With two out, Darcey Cook and Dean Wheeler were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. A McDonald single cashed in two runs, then Seip followed this with another single to bring in two more. Chris Stewart tripled but was stranded. With the Barons now having a commanding lead, and Seip on the mound, they retired the Atwood side, one, two, three. The Baron’s third inning started with a double by Peters, followed by Shawn Bromley’s single. Cole Stewart sacrificed to pick up an RBI. Cook singled, then Wheeler was walked. That was it, however, as two quick outs ended the inning. The only highlight for Atwood’s scoreless inning was a single. The Barons added one more run in the fourth on a double by Mike Bromley and a single and RBI by Shawn Bromley. Seip retired the Atwood side inorder in the bottom of the inning. The fifth inning saw Cook lead offwith a triple and come home on aWheeler double.Atwood managed two runs in theirat-bat with two hits, but it wasn’t enough as Blyth walked away with a 10-3 victory. On Friday, the Barons welcomed the Goderich Gators, the team that handed the Barons their first loss, to town. Darryl Wheeler was on the mound for Blyth and he enjoyed a good first inning allowing only one hit. In the bottom half,Wheeler helped his own cause by drawing a walk, then coming home on a double by Dean Wheeler. McDonald walked as well, but the next three batters went down in order. Chris Stewart picked up an RBI and the Barons had an early 2-0 lead. Wheeler repeated his performance in the second inning, giving up no runs. Starting of the bottom of the second, Cole Stewart reached first on an error, After two outs, Darryl Wheeler ripped a single to score Stewart. Back on the mound Wheeler retired the side with two fly-outs and a strikeout. McDonald led off the third with a single to right field. With two out, Peters drew a walk but both runners were left on base. The Gators struck back with tworuns on two hits, including a homer,to narrow the gap to 3-2. An unproductive fourth, with thehighlight being a Scott Bromleysingle, the Barons needed to shut down the Gators, which was exactly what happened. Wheeler surrendered just one hit. Strikes put the Barons back out in the field and the Gators’ sixth didn’t bring them any closer either. In the bottom half of the inning, Darryl Wheeler walked, but was thrown out while trying to steal second. Two strikeouts closed the inning. The tying run came on base during the seventh inning, but three consecutive fly outs killed the Gators’ chances for victory. This 3-2 outing truly was a test for the Barons and a big victory to even their season series with the Gators at one game apiece. The Barons travelled to Exeter on Sunday to meet the defending league champs. Cook walked and stole second to begin the game, but was left standing when the next three Barons went down in order. Cook was on the mound and kept the Braves off the scoreboard. Chris Stewart led off the next inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shawn Bromley. The next two Barons struck out, ending the threat. Cook sat the next three batters in order. Then Jeff Elliott gave the Barons a runner with a single. He stole second then moved to third on an overthrow. Cook brought him home on an error by the Braves’ pitcher. The inning ended with the Barons leading by one. Exeter tied it in the half with a run on two hits. Chris Stewart and Shawn Bromley repeated their performance with a single and a sacrifice bunt. But that was it as the three outs came before they could do any more damage. The Braves failed to add to their score in the fourth. Elliott led off the Barons’ fifth with a single and moved to thirdwhen the defence mishandledCook’s grounder. Elliott came homeon Peters’ ground ball, that also sawCook thrown out while trying tosteal third. Cook retired the first three Exeter batters. Then the Barons broke the game open in their half of the sixth. Chris Stewart was hit by a pitch. Shawn Bromley ripped a single to centre. The big blow came with a homer over the centrefield fence by Cole Stewart to give the Barons a 5-1 lead. After walking two Braves, Cookrecorded three outs to hold them. In the seventh the Barons failed toadd to their score. Then Exeter threatened with acouple of hits in the bottom of the inning, but Cook got the final batter to hit into the double play and finish the game. Cook allowed just one run on four hits. The Barons are back in action, Friday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. versus the Goderich Orioles. The Brussels U-12 soccer team played home last week against St. Columban.
