This past weekend found the Blyth Bantam Bombers softball team in Wiarton for a weekend tournament. This relatively young team is enjoying its second year in the WOAA league play and the tournament was a great experience as they battled against older more established teams. Game one was pitted against Wiarton and although Blyth jumped ahead by three runs in the first, the fifth inning was their downfall and Wiarton came out on top 8-5. A seasoned team from Elmira took on the Bombers and after three innings the score was tied. Elmira scored a couple of unearned runs and as the Bombers couldn’t combat their nerves they fell to a 9-3 defeat. The final game for the Bombers was against the Kitchener Kolts. After the first inning the two teams were tied. The Bombers couldn’t get the lead and the result was 6-3 in the Kolts’ favour. Pitching duties were shared by Adam Cronin and Ty Sebastian. The infield consisted of first base, Kirby Cook; second base, shared by Cronin and Sebastian; shortstop, Tyler Stevenson; third base, Collin Whitfield and catcher Tyler Black. Outfielders were Kayla Black, Tyler Hallahan, Lucas Witherspoon, Shaun Reinink and Kurtis Green. On disabled list is Danny Dery. The coaching staff of Paul Sebastian, Phil Black and Pat Cronin were pleased with the team’s showing and have a positive attitude for the team’s growth. They also felt this upcoming young team played very competitively this weekend. Sparling’s Propane Co. Ltd. has sponsored the team’s jerseys and Howson’s supplied hats. The next home game in regular play is Sunday, June 29 at 7 p.m. against Walkerton. Brussels U-10s played against Clinton last week. Clinton gave the Brussels Cobras a run for their money. It was back and forth throughout the whole game but Kiaran Jared finally scored. Helping him were Cassidy Stevenson and Kody Harding. With minutes left Patrick Franken scored a nice one in the top corner. Assisting were Delayna Smith and Jamie Perrault. Goaltending by Eric VanNes and Dean Scarrow was flawless. The June 18 game was against Wingham. Neither teams had suffered a loss this season. Devin Bachert started the game with a quick goal assisted by Smith. Wingham came back but Brussels worked hard and Jared scored assisted by Katie Roth. Wingham scored again and Brussels didn’t give up. Dalen Martin scored and Smith assisted. Wingham scored, then Brussels had a nice goal by Franken with Mitchell Ward and Michael Gulutzen assisting. Wingham tied it up with a final score of 4-4. The U-12 Blyth Lightning soccer team travelled to Wingham to take on Wingham Chiropractic. It turned out to be an action- packed game played in the rain. Rob Gordon netted the first goal for Blyth with a nice passing play that included all of his linemates, Ryan Nesbitt, Dalton Carey and Jonathan Pizzati. Wingham worked the ball well and were able to keep the play in the Blyth end. Wingham's efforts paid off as they scored twice to take the lead. Dylan Walton played a good first half making a lot of saves in the Blyth net. Gordon took over in net for the second half. The Lightning came back in the second half with Nesbitt and Carey teaming up to tie the game. Then Wyatt Carey scored with Nesbitt assisting to put the Lightning in the lead. It was a short-lived lead as Wingham came storming back scoring twice more putting themselves back in the lead. Nesbitt scored once more with Melissa Hoggart assisting to tie things up. In the dying minutes of the game the Lightning's defense mishandled the ball and allowed Wingham the go-ahead goal. With only a couple minutes left, Blyth was unable to mount an attack and Wingham won 5-4. U-12s lose — just The Brussels Bantams played home to Atwood on a sunny Sunday, June 22. It wasn’t long before Blyth’s Jessie Pott and Brendon Boven worked the ball towards the Goderich net. Brent Drost took the pass and scored. Austin Sjaarda earned the assist on the next goal when he kicked the ball back. Boven lobbed the ball right into the corner of the net. Blyth outshot their opponents in the second half, but were unable to score another goal.
