FHT hires executive director Rob Hutchison, chair of the newly-incorporated North Huron Family Health Team has announced that Donna Vines has been hired as the Family Health Team’s first full- time executive director. This new executive position was advertised in the spring of this year and Vines was the top-ranked candidate following a province-wide search. “The recruitment of a full-time executive director is the next important step in the evolution of our Family Health Team” stated Hutchison. “With approved operating funds from the Ministry of Health, we’re now ready to move into the important staff recruitment phase and build up this new team of health care professionals.” Prior to accepting this new job, Vines has been the manager of patient care services at the Listowel and Wingham Hospitals Alliance. In this role Vines led the implementation of the breast health centre located at the Listowel site, co-ordinated the standardization of practices in the surgical program at both sites, and led the recent successful accreditation process for the Alliance. Having grown up in Huron County and having spent her career working in rural hospitals, Vines is well positioned to assume this challenging new role. “I am really looking forward to this new challenge and am excited about the possibilities in terms of initiating new programs and services,” said Vines. “I am a strong supporter of the government’s Family Health Team model and I know the new health professionals that have been approved for this area will allow us to fill some important gaps in service.” In her new role, Vines will be responsible for recruiting new health care professionals to North Huron based on the operating budget that has been approved by the Ministry of Health. Beginning this fall, the Family Health Team will be recruiting for the following new allied health professionals: registered nurses, nurse practitioners, social worker, dietician and pharmacist. The executive director of the Family Health Team will be reporting to a non-profit board of directors which in addition to Hutchison includes: Dr. Mark Moores, Dr. Shaun Marshall, Margrét Comack, Steve Jackson, Linda Deans, Mary Atkinson and Cathy Kelly. The Family Health Team model is a new approach to primary health care that brings together different health care providers to co-ordinate the highest possible quality of care for patients. Designed to give doctors support from other allied health professionals, most Family Health Teams consist of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals who work collaboratively, each utilizing their experience and skills so that patients can receive high quality care as close to home as possible. Since 2005, the Liberal government has approved 150 Family Health Teams located across the province in both urban and rural settings. An additional 50 Family Health Teams were approved in the government’s spring budget for implementation over the next few years. Besides Wingham, the following communities in Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth have approved Family Health Teams: Brockton, Clinton, Goderich, Listowel, Lion’s Head, Owen Sound, Sauble Beach, Seaforth, St. Marys and Stratford.
