HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-06-26, Page 2On Saturday, June 21, Brussels Transport Ltd. celebrated its 50th year in business. Approximately 450 people attended a delicious barbecue, catered by Cardiff Catering, followed by entertainment. In 1958, George Jutzi moved to Brussels and bought the trucking business from Lorne Bryans. He changed the name to Brussels Transport. The purchase included a straight truck and two tractor trailers. For the first 10 years, the business was operated between his house and a property at the west end of Brussels. In 1970 a lot was purchased across from the old railyards and a three- bay shed was built. For the first time, there was a place to park trucks inside. The business operated from this location until 1989. Livestock, fertilizer and grain were the main commodities hauled, mostly between points within southwestern Ontario. George’s son Gerry joined the business in 1974 and Jim in 1977. In 1979 the company went limited. A third son, Neil, joined the business in 1980. Gerry left the business in 1987 leaving George, Jim and Neil as partners. In 1989, Jim and his wife Lyn bought a farm north of Brussels and moved the business to its present location. A former hog barn was remodeled for receiving livestock and a 40'x80' insulated shop was built. For the first time there was a place with heat to work on the trucks in the winter. Over the years, offices, a parts room and two wash bays were added on. In 2004, a new livestock receiving barn for 800 hogs was built and the original barn torn down. This made room for an expanding fleet of trucks. In 1997 George retired and sold his shares to Jim and Lyn. The company now operates hauling mostly livestock from as far east as the Maritimes to as far west as Alberta and covers much of the U.S. Jim and Lyn purchased O’Rourke Transport of Dublin in 2005 and though a separate company, the two companies work closely together. Brussels Transport purchased the livestock business of C & M Transport this past spring. Jim, Lyn and Neil have now been joined by the next generation as Jim and Lyn’s son Christopher has started working with them as a driver. Their other two sons, Tyler and Ryan are finishing their education before they decide if they will join the business. PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2008. By Jo-Ann McDonald The week began at the Brussels Legion with the executive and general meeting.
