By Brent Drost On June 16 the third meeting of the Huron County 4-H Sheep (South) Club was held at the farm of Florence and Don Pullen. Youth leaders Fraser Falconer and Nicole Moore organized the club into teams for a fun game of flags. Once everyone arrived and the game was finished they went to the Pullens’ veranda. The meeting opened with the 4-H pledge. Secretary Amber Brodie read the minutes of the previous meeting. Members put on plastic boots and went to the barn where leaders Florence Pullen and Deb Falconer discussed how to judge sheep. Members judged a class of four lambs and gave their reasons for their placing. Then members went with youth leader Nicole to see how first aid kits were judged. Some members gave their reasons to show newer members how to judge and give reasons. Back at the house leaders briefly discussed the importance of feeds such as creep feed or colostrum, which is the first milk given by a sheep or cow. Then leaders talked about deworming sheep and what signs to look for when sheep need to be dewormed. The next meeting date is a field trip on July 19 in Ilderton to attend the Sheep Classic. Members were given trip forms that are to be signed by their parents. By Kristina Drennan The fourth meeting of the Lucknow 4-H Beef Club was held on June 7 at the residence of Doug and Sue Marriott at 9:30 a.m. Rob Marriott welcomed all the members and opened the meeting with the pledge followed by the roll call led by Kristina Drennan. Marriott then introduced the guest speaker, Denis Eagles. He asked the members the three key points about an animal. After some discussion the members came up with fat, meat, muscle/bone structure. He pointed out the different parts on a real animal so the members could see it visually as well as hear it. He started with the hind end of the animal and moved his way to the front of the animal. He gave the members many important tips to consider when judging an animal. The members got a chance at applying the information by having the opportunity to judge three heifers. Some of the senior members paired up with junior members to help them. Sue Marriott handed out judging handbooks to the new members to help them when judging. They all gave their reasons. Mr. Eagles then gave the official reasons. Most of the members were correct in their reasons. After the judging, Rosemary Foran informed the members of upcoming events and handed out pages of information to the members to put in their 4-H books. Emily handed out the outline for Fun Day and informed the members that Fun Day will be held at Paul and Christine MacIntyre’s place on July 20. The members enjoyed some homemade cookies, watermelon and refreshments and closed the meeting with the pledge. 4-Hers learn about judging 4-H Club meets at Pullen farm • Custom application for post spraying of corn, beans, grains, and pasture ground • Row crop spraying • Low soil compaction • Very accurate • Hay and pasture ground needs that extra boost • Spreaders readily available • Terra-Gators • Bulk delivery unit CHEMICALS FERTILIZERS We will customize a fertilizer and chemical program specific to your requirements.
