Fifty-eight Women’s Missionary
Society members from Huron-Perth
Presbyterial met in Knox
Presbyterian Church, Goderich, for
their spring rally. Listowel Bessie
MacMurchy group were in charge
of registration. First vice-president,
Lois Horne, North Easthope, was
chairman for the day and led in the
WMS Purpose and the responsive
Psalm 147.
The hymn, Praise The Lord With
The Sound of Trumpet was sung
and president Bernice Richards,
Stratford St. Andrews, gave the
opening opening prayer. The ladies
were welcome to Knox by Rev.
William Vanderstelt and Mary Jane
Bisset, as well as Eunice Bisset for
the afternoon WMS and Marlene
Starkey for the Arthur Circle WMS.
The Presbyterial was honoured to
have as a guest, Jessie Knox,
president of the Southwestern
Ontario Synodical.
The morning speaker was Mary
Koosterman, a representative of the
YMCA fitness centres. She spoke
on health, food, exercise, and
quality time with the Lord. She was
thanked by Florence Fawcett, North
Easthope.
Reports on the Synodical, which
was held in Owen Sound in April,
were given by Lois Horne; Ina
McMillan, Mitchell; Shirley
Aitcheson, Avonton and Jan
McInnes, Atwood.
Twenty-five members of Huron-
Perth Presbyterial attended the
Synodical.
Ruth Hart reviewed several books
from the book room, noting that
many of them had an environmental
theme. AEC Ann Yee Hibbs spoke
briefly on the future of the WMS,
mentioning ways meetings can be
changed to encourage more women
to support the Society.
Following the grace by Ruth
Dewar, Atwood, lunch was served
by the Goderich ladies. At noon a
plant sale, in charge of Cromarty,
raised over $84 in support of
Evangel Hall.
The afternoon program began
with bagpipe music by Matt Hoy
and the history of the Kirkin’of the
Tarten by Ron Sangster. Devotions
based on the theme of the rally, In
the Bulb There Is a Flower, were in
charge of Mitchell WMS with
Margaret French reading scripture,
Ruth Laing giving the meditation
and Marjorie McDougall leading in
prayer. Hymns sung sung were For
the Beauty of the Earth and All
Things Bright and Beautiful.
The guest speaker was Lori
Ransom, whose grandfather came
from Scotland and whose father
was Algonquin. She spoke on the
renewal of relationships between
the Aboriginal people, Indian, Inuit
and Metis and the non-Aboriginal
people. She suggested one thing the
Presbyterians can do is provide
teachers with such things as
dictionaries in Aboriginal
languages such as Ojibway.
Attending the rally were three
former missionaries, Ida White,
Dianne Osborn and Lillian
Sparling.
Presbyterial treasurer, Elizabeth
Stewart, Monkton, reported that
there are 132 members in afternoon
groups and 117 members in evening
groups.
The fall rally will be in St. Marys
on Sept. 15 with a bag lunch.
Monkton WMS gave the courtesy
remarks, and following the hymn,
In the Bulb There is a Flower, the
closing prayer was given by Helen
Denseith, Harrington WMS.
