with scores of friends and family at
the Belgrave Community Centre on
Saturday.
Coultes was on the end of a
consistently long receiving line of
people stopping in to wish her a
happy centennial. And while some
of her senses may not be what they
used to be, she is still as smart as a
whip her friends say.
Coultes has spent years
celebrating one of her true passions:
bridge. Over the years, Coultes
could often be seen playing bridge
on several different nights
throughout the community. Though
it has been some time since she has
been behind the wheel of the car, she
has still attempted to be active in her
community.
Over the years she has been very
active in the church, Knox United in
Belgrave and has spent most of her
time mostly with her family, but also
as a bit of a collector.
Coultes, whose maiden name is
Homouth, spent her life as a teacher.
She began teaching in Windsor, then
eventually returned to Huron County
where she finished her teaching
career. She was married to Cecil
Coultes, who passed away in 1972,
just two years after the couple sold
their farm, where the Coultes family
had been for 33 years, to James
Coultes.
The couple had one daughter,
Anne, who passed away in her 50s.
Coultes was born in the area, but
lost her parents at a very young age.
She was raised in the old Lower
Town of Wingham and sheeventually attended StratfordNormal School before taking up acareer as a teacher. Coultes had onesister.
The June meeting of the Evening
Group of the Belgrave UCW was
held at the home of Muriel Coultes
on Tuesday, June 3 with Barbara
Anderson opening the meeting with
a reading.
Donna Shaw led in worship
using the material from the United
Church on racism and
multiculturalism.
The hymn, The Church’s One
Foundation was sung followed
by prayer and the scripture Psalm
13. Following the hymn, The Day
Thou Gavest, Donna read an article
on the intention of the United
Church to study racism in all its
forms.
The minutes were read and
adopted. The treasurer’s report and
card report were given. The roll call
was answering the question, Where
did you come from?
The over-80 birthday party was
planned for Tuesday, July 22.
Invitations will be sent out.
It was decided not to have a
September meeting, but make the
general meeting later on in
September a special event. That
meeting is planned for Sept. 25 at
7:30 p.m. with Emily Phillips as
guest speaker.
The October Evening Group will
meet at Nancy Folkard’s on Oct. 7 at
7:30 p.m.
Muriel Coultes had the program
and continued with the question,
Where Did You Come From?
She read a response from an
Aboriginal perspective. He said
many things had changed for them,
their land, their laws and their
customs, by the Indian Act. To them,
O’Canada, our home and native land
makes them feel uncomfortable, as
their home and native land no longer
exist.
The group discussed another
situation where a church was
deciding whether to support a Native
project, and through their discussion
which was overheard by a native
person, was then not supported.
Members discussed the situation if it
happened in Belgrave.
Mrs. Coultes also read a story
from the latest Mandate, A
Survivor’s Story which told of
his experiences in the residential
school, and the effect it had on his
life.
Following the benediction and
grace, Louise Bosman served lunch
and a social time followed.
